Hoop size guide

4 × 7 in embroidery hoop (100 × 180 mm)

A narrow frame with a 100 × 180 mm (4 × 7 in) stitch area, sold mainly as a magnetic frame or a continuous border hoop. Brother makes a 4 × 7 in magnetic frame for its 5 × 7 in machines, and Baby Lock sells both a magnetic frame and a border hoop at this size. It suits long, thin designs.

A 4 × 7 in hoop gives about 27.9 square inches of stitch area: 4 × 7 in (100 × 180 mm). 61 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.

What fits in a 4 × 7 in hoop

  • Names, banners and short borders up to about 3.7 × 6.7 in (95 × 170 mm)
  • Sleeve, cuff and pant-leg designs that run along a narrow strip
  • Single-line lettering on towels, bibs and table runners
  • Long borders on sheets, pillowcases and runners, stitched one 4 × 7 in section at a time in a border hoop
  • Fabric up to 2 mm thick in Brother's magnetic frame, which clamps with six magnets

Needs a bigger hoop

  • Standard 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) designs, which are about 30 mm too wide
  • Anything wider than about 3.9 in (100 mm) across the short side
  • Jacket-back and full-front designs

Good to know: Brother's page for its 4 × 7 in magnetic frame (SAMF180N) says it is for Brother machines with a 5 × 7 in field. It lists the PE800, PE900, SE1900, SE2000, NS1250E and NS2850D series, says the frame works with material up to 2 mm thick, and includes six magnets. The page gives inches only. Baby Lock titles its 4 × 7 in magnetic frame (EMFC180) 100mm x 180mm and lists the Accord, Bloom, Ellure and Ellure Plus for it. Embird lists Brother's Innovis Endless hoop and Pfaff's Creative Endless hoop at the same 100 × 180 mm. This is a frame size, not a machine field. Echidna Sewing's list of Brother maximum fields shows no model with a 100 × 180 mm field, so the frame is a narrower option inside a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field. A magnetic frame does not enlarge what the machine can stitch. Do not confuse it with Brother's 5 × 7 in magnetic sash frame (SAMF180), which is a wider frame. Baby Lock's continuous border hoop (ALBF) is another separate part: its page says a 100mm x 180mm area can be embroidered each time you rehoop.

Standard placements that fit at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, patch. See the design size chart.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 4x7 magnetic hoop fit the Brother PE800 or PE900?

Brother lists its 4 × 7 in magnetic frame (SAMF180N) for the PE800, PE900, SE1900, SE2000, NS1250E and NS2850D series. It is made for Brother machines with a 5 × 7 in field, so check your exact model on Brother's page before you buy.

Is a 4x7 hoop the same as 100 × 180 mm?

Baby Lock titles its 4 × 7 in magnetic frame 100 mm × 180 mm, and Embird lists Brother's and Pfaff's endless hoops at 100 × 180 mm. Brother's own magnetic frame page gives inches only, so use 100 × 180 mm when you size a design and keep it a few millimeters inside the edge.

What is the difference between a 4x7 border hoop and a magnetic frame?

A border hoop, like Baby Lock's, lets you slide the fabric through to stitch continuous designs, with a 100 × 180 mm area for each rehooping. A magnetic frame clamps flat fabric with magnets. Both give a 4 × 7 in area.

Can I use a 4x7 frame on a 4x4 machine?

No. A machine with a 100 × 100 mm field cannot stitch a 180 mm length, whatever frame you attach. Some 4 × 4 in machines have a longer frame that you move between positions, but each design is still limited to 4 × 4 in.
