Brother PE900: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: PE-900, PE 900

Embroidery-only machine with a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field, 193 built-in designs, wireless transfer and the Artspira app. It stitches up to 650 stitches per minute. One needle, a 5 × 7 in hoop in the box, and no official hat frame.

The Brother PE900 is a embroidery-only machine with a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST, .PEN files and gets designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and has 193 built-in designs and 13 lettering fonts.

PE900 hoop size and embroidery area

The PE900 can stitch a design up to 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5 × 7 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 5" × 7" hoop (large) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)).

Optional from Brother: 4" × 7" magnetic hoop (4 × 7 in (100 × 180 mm)), 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

What file format does the PE900 use?

The PE900 reads .PES, .PHC, .DST and .PEN files. You load designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and the Artspira app works with it. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the PE900 is for

A home embroiderer who wants a 5 × 7 in field and wireless design transfer from a PC or mobile device. Skip it if you need hats, volume production for sale, or a machine that also sews.

Strengths

  • 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field, with the 5 × 7 in hoop in the box
  • Wireless LAN sends designs from a PC with Design Database Transfer, so no USB stick is needed
  • Works with the Artspira app, where you can draw designs up to 5 × 7 in and send them to the machine
  • 193 built-in designs and 13 lettering fonts, with a 3.7 in color touch screen
  • Up to 650 stitches per minute, and the manual lists an optional 4 × 7 in magnetic hoop

Limits

  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • Brother lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats
  • Embroidery only, with no sewing functions
  • Wireless setup uses 2.4 GHz networks and does not work with WPA/WPA2 Enterprise

Good to know: The 13 fonts include 1 Cyrillic and 3 Japanese alphabets; Brother's design guide shows 9 Latin-alphabet fonts. Brother's US spec table labels the 193 designs as Disney/Pixar designs, which looks like a page error because the text describes general decorative designs. The manual lists the optional magnetic hoop as 7 × 4 in (180 × 100 mm), sold separately. Brother's US page calls the arm space 7.4 in to the right of the needle. Brother's US page also advertises 50 free downloadable designs. Only Swing Design's product copy calls it the successor to the PE800; Brother does not say so.

How the PE900 compares

Frequently asked questions

What hoop size does the Brother PE900 use?

The 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) hoop comes in the box, and 5 × 7 in is the largest stitch area. The manual lists optional 4 × 7 in magnetic, 4 × 4 in and small hoops, which are all smaller.

What file formats does the Brother PE900 read?

It reads .pes, .phc, .dst and .pen files. DST files show as file names only, without a picture, in the pattern list.

Does the Brother PE900 have Wi-Fi?

Yes. Wireless LAN (2.4 GHz) lets you send designs from a PC with Design Database Transfer, and the Artspira app can send drawn designs from a mobile device. The USB port still works too.

Can the Brother PE900 embroider hats?

Brother lists no cap frame for the PE900. The hoops in its manual are flat frames, so it is not set up for finished caps.

Brother PE900 or PE800: what changed?

Both stitch up to 5 × 7 in at 650 stitches per minute. The PE900 adds wireless LAN, the Artspira app, an optional magnetic hoop and .pen file support, and has 193 built-in designs against 138. Brother US lists the PE800 as discontinued.
