9.5 × 14 in embroidery hoop (240 × 360 mm)
A very large hoop with a 240 × 360 mm (9.5 × 14 in) stitch area. Brother's Stellaire XE2 and XJ2 and Baby Lock's Altair and Meridian lines use it. It suits big jacket backs, wall hangings and quilt borders.
A 9.5 × 14 in hoop gives about 133.9 square inches of stitch area: 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm). 1 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.
What fits in a 9.5 × 14 in hoop
- Large jacket-back designs, roughly 9 × 13 in (230 × 330 mm)
- Big wall hangings and framed pieces
- Quilt borders and sashing strips up to about 13 in (330 mm) long
- Full-front hoodie and sweatshirt designs
- Two 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) designs side by side in one hooping
- Two or three 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) designs in one row
Needs a bigger hoop
- Designs larger than 9.5 × 14 in, such as the 10⅝ × 16 in (272 × 408 mm) field on Brother's Luminaire machines
- Back designs wider than about 14 in (360 mm)
- Long borders and tablecloth edges without re-hooping
Good to know: This size is mostly Brother and Baby Lock naming. Brother lists 240 × 360 mm for the XE2 and XJ2 on Brother Australia, and the XE2 comes with a 360 × 240 mm frame. Baby Lock's 9½ × 14 in hoop (EF95S) is quoted as 240 × 360 mm and is listed for the Altair, Altair 2, Meridian and Meridian 2. The hoop has a coded feature that Baby Lock's IQ Intuition Positioning app reads. Other brands sell hoops about 14 in long with a different short side, so they are not interchangeable with a 240 mm hoop. Janome's RE36b for the Memory Craft 550E is 200 × 360 mm. Husqvarna Viking's Royal Hoop II is 360 × 200 mm. Embird lists Viking's Imperial at 260 × 360 mm, and Pfaff's Supreme hoop is 360 × 260 mm. When a design is bigger than the field, split it in software and stitch it in sections. A multi-position hoop saves re-hooping but does not enlarge the machine's maximum area.

Brother's Stellaire2 XE2 includes one at 240 × 360 mm, and Brother Australia lists the XJ2 at the same size. Baby Lock's 9½ × 14 in hoop (EF95S) is listed for the Altair, Altair 2, Meridian and Meridian 2.
Is 9.5 x 14 the same as 240 × 360 mm?
Yes, that is how Brother and Baby Lock quote it. 9.5 × 14 in works out to about 241 × 356 mm, so use the millimeter figure when you check a design.
Can I stitch a design bigger than 9.5 x 14 in?
Not in one hooping on a machine with this field. Split the design in software and stitch it in sections, or use a machine with a larger field such as Brother's Luminaire at 10⅝ × 16 in (272 × 408 mm).
Is a 14 in Janome or Viking hoop the same as 9.5 x 14?
No. Janome's RE36b is 200 × 360 mm and Viking's Royal Hoop II is 360 × 200 mm, both 40 mm narrower than a 240 × 360 mm hoop. Check the millimeter size before you buy.
