Also written: VM-5200, VM 5200, Essence VM5200, Innov-is VM5200

Brother's Essence Innov-is sewing, embroidery and quilting combo. It has an 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) embroidery field, 318 built-in designs, 17 embroidery fonts and 715 sewing stitches. There is no Wi-Fi: designs load by USB only, and no cap frame.

The Brother VM5200 is a sewing and embroidery machine with a 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer, and has 318 built-in designs and 17 lettering fonts.

VM5200 hoop size and embroidery area

The VM5200 can stitch a design up to 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) in one hooping, which is the 8 × 12 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 8" × 12" hoop (extra large, SA447) (8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm)), 5" × 7" hoop (large, SA439) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)).

Optional from Brother: 4" × 4" hoop (medium, SA438) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), 8" × 8" hoop (SA446) (8 × 8 in (200 × 200 mm)), 6" × 6" square hoop (SA448) (5.9 × 5.9 in (150 × 150 mm)), Border frame (about 4" × 12", SABF6200D1) (4 × 12 in (100 × 300 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5", SA437) (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, full front, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

Who the VM5200 is for

A fit for sewists and quilters who want one machine for everyday sewing plus large embroidery such as jacket backs, quilt blocks and big appliqué, and who are fine moving designs by USB. Skip it if you want Wi-Fi or an app, need to embroider finished hats, or plan to run orders in volume.

Strengths

  • Large 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) embroidery field, with the extra-large hoop in the box
  • 318 built-in embroidery designs and 17 embroidery lettering fonts, plus 715 built-in sewing stitches
  • Embroidery speed can be set to 350, 600 or 1,050 stitches per minute
  • 7 in color touch screen, automatic needle threading and automatic thread cutting, and a knee lifter in the box
  • Reads .pes, .phc and .dst files from a USB flash drive or over the USB cable from a computer

Limits

  • No Wi-Fi and no companion app: Brother lists the machine as not wireless-enabled, so designs go in by USB only
  • No cap frame: Brother's spec table lists cap frame capability as no, so it is not set up for finished hats
  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • Brother's US page shows no price and sells it through dealers, so you need a dealer to confirm the current price and stock

Good to know: The field is listed with the long side front to back as the frame attaches. Brother's manual gives the extra-large frame as H 30 cm × W 20 cm, so it is stored here as 200 wide × 300 tall; Brother's spec table writes it as 12 × 8 in. The data comes from Brother's operation manual (product code 882-C53), Brother's 2019 Essence brochure and the Brother US product page. Brother's page is not consistent in places. It says 715 sewing stitches in the description but 745 stitch selections in the spec table; the brochure explains the 745 as 715 built in plus 30 more on the My Custom Stitch CD, so 715 is the built-in count. It says 17 lettering fonts in the description but 5 in the spec table; the manual shows the 5 are the sewing lettering fonts (four alphabets plus Japanese), and the 17 embroidery fonts match both the brochure and the embroidery font screens in Brother's quick reference guide. Screen size is the 7 in Brother quotes, which matches the 3.6 × 6.0 in listed in the spec table. The page and the brochure both list the two hoops in the box as 8 × 12 in and 5 × 7 in, but the carton list names SA438, which is the 4 × 4 in frame (5 × 7 in is SA439), so the 5 × 7 in is treated as included and the 4 × 4 in as optional. Brother's manual says the large 5 × 7 in (SA439) and medium 4 × 4 in (SA438) frames come with the machine in some countries only. The manual also lists an optional wide table, border frame and small frame, and an embroidery card reader sold separately that plugs into the USB port, so card is not listed as a built-in transfer method. Brother's US page shows no price; the price range comes from several US dealer pages that listed the same selling price on the check date. Brother's manual gives 33.7 lb for the machine and 8.5 lb for the embroidery unit. Brother's pages do not say which machine it replaced or what replaced it.
