7 × 12 in embroidery hoop (180 × 300 mm)
A large hoop with a 180 × 300 mm (7 × 12 in) stitch area. Baby Lock sells it as the EF76 hoop with a grid and as the EMF300 magnetic frame, and Brother sells a 7 × 12 in frame (SA440) and magnetic frame (SAMF300). It suits long designs up to about 12 in (300 mm).
A 7 × 12 in hoop gives about 83.7 square inches of stitch area: 7 × 12 in (180 × 300 mm). 30 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.
What fits in a 7 × 12 in hoop
- Jacket-back and sweatshirt designs up to about 6.5 × 11 in (165 × 280 mm)
- Banners, runners and borders up to about 11 in (280 mm) long
- Tote-bag and pillow designs in portrait or landscape
- Two 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) designs side by side with room between them
Needs a bigger hoop
- 8 × 8 in (200 × 200 mm) quilt blocks, which are 20 mm wider than the 180 mm side

- Jacket-back designs wider than about 7 in (180 mm)
- Single designs longer than about 11.8 in (300 mm)
Good to know: Baby Lock's page for the EF76 hoop and grid gives 7 × 12 in (180mm x 300mm) and lists the Aerial, Ellegante 3, Journey, Pathfinder, Spirit and Unity. A dealer's listing names more Baby Lock and Brother models and gives SA440 as the alternate Brother part number, so compatibility lists differ by source. Check your exact model. Brother Canada's SA440 page calls it an extra-large frame for areas up to 7 × 12 in and says you can move the hooped fabric to an overlapping section to combine designs without re-hooping. Magnetic versions exist. Baby Lock's EMF300 is for single-needle machines, and its page lists the Altair 2, Meridian 2, Solaris 2, Radiance and others. Brother's SAMF300 is two frames with eight magnet pieces, for material up to 2 mm thick. Echidna Sewing's list of Brother fields shows no current Brother machine with a 180 × 300 mm field. The retired VE2200, VM5100 and VM6200D have it. Embird lists Brother's Innovis hoop at 180 × 300 mm (7.1 × 11.8 in).
Standard placements that fit at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch. See the design size chart.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Baby Lock 7x12 hoop part number?
The hoop with a grid is EF76 and the magnetic frame is EMF300, according to Baby Lock's pages. They are separate products with different compatibility lists, so check the one for your machine.
Is the Brother SA440 the same size as the Baby Lock 7x12 hoop?
Both are sold as 7 × 12 in. Baby Lock gives 180 × 300 mm, and Embird lists a Brother Innovis hoop at the same size, but Brother's own page gives inches only. A dealer listing shows SA440 as the alternate part number for the EF76. Hoops are made for specific models, so use the one your maker lists.
Which machines have a 7x12 in embroidery field?
Echidna Sewing's Brother list shows no current Brother model with a 180 × 300 mm field. The retired VE2200, VM5100 and VM6200D have it. A 7 × 12 in hoop is also an optional hoop on some Baby Lock machines, so check the maker's list for your model.
Is 7 x 12 in the same as 180 × 300 mm?
Yes, as makers quote it. 7 × 12 in works out to about 178 × 305 mm, so use the 180 × 300 mm figure and keep designs a little under it.
