Also written: MC9850, MC 9850, 9850, Janome 9850, Memory Craft 9850, MC9850 LE, 9850LE
Janome's mid-range sewing, quilting and embroidery combo with a 6.7 × 7.9 in (170 × 200 mm) embroidery field, 175 built-in designs and 200 sewing stitches. It reads JEF files from USB. The limits: one needle, no Wi-Fi, no cap frame, and the large hoop may be extra.
The Janome Memory Craft 9850 is a sewing and embroidery machine with a 6.7 × 8 in (170 × 200 mm) embroidery field. It reads .JEF, .JEF+ files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 175 built-in designs and 6 lettering fonts.
Horizon Memory Craft 9850 hoop size and embroidery area
The Horizon Memory Craft 9850 can stitch a design up to 6.7 × 8 in (170 × 200 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5.5 × 8 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.
In the box: SQ14a hoop (5.5 × 5.5 in (140 × 140 mm)).
Optional from Janome: RE20a hoop (6.7 × 8 in (170 × 200 mm)).
Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the Horizon Memory Craft 9850 use?

Who the Horizon Memory Craft 9850 is for
A fit for sewists who want one machine for sewing, quilting and embroidery up to 6.7 × 7.9 in. Skip it if you want wireless transfer, a multi-needle machine or finished hats.
Strengths
- Embroidery field of 6.7 × 7.9 in (170 × 200 mm), larger than the 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field common on home combos
- Removable embroidery unit, so you can sew without taking it off the machine's back
- 175 built-in embroidery designs and on-screen editing such as resize, flip and combine
- 200 built-in sewing stitches, 6 one-step buttonholes and a 9 mm maximum stitch width
- Embroiders at up to 800 stitches per minute and sews at up to 1,000
Limits
- Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
- USB transfer only; Janome lists no wireless connection for this model
- Janome's Australian page lists only one hoop in the box, so the 170 × 200 mm hoop may be an extra purchase on the standard model
- No cap frame is listed, so it is not set up for finished hats
Good to know: Janome's own pages for this model were checked through its Australian spec page; Janome's US product page blocked automated access, so US details come from US dealer listings that reproduce Janome's text. Janome sells a Memory Craft 9850 Limited Edition in the US; dealer listings for it show the RE20a (170 x 200 mm) and SQ14a (140 x 140 mm) hoops both in the box, 175 designs and 200 stitches, while the standard 9850 listings show one 140 x 140 mm hoop. Check which hoops your version includes. Janome Australia lists 6 built-in embroidery fonts; one US dealer page says only 2 fonts, which appears to refer to the sewing fonts (Block and Script), so 6 is used. Janome Australia lists the machine as 10.4 kg (about 22.9 lb) with the embroidery unit at 3.4 kg; a US dealer gives 26.5 lb, probably a shipping weight. Janome Australia lists no upper feed device and no AcuFeed for this model; the 9 mm Even Feed Foot (Janome's walking foot) is a separate purchase. Release year and screen size were not found. Status is based on the model still appearing on Janome's site and at dealers.
