A discontinued Singer sewing and embroidery combo, also sold as the SEQS-6000. It has a 10.2 × 6.3 in (260 × 160 mm) hoop and 30 sewing stitches. It has no screen: designs come from a Windows PC over a USB cable. Singer's US site no longer lists it.
The Singer Futura XL-400 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 10 × 6 in (260 × 160 mm) embroidery field. It reads .FHE, .CHE, .XXX, .PSW, .PEC, .PES, .HUS, .SEW, .EXP, .DST, .PCS files and gets designs by USB cable to a computer, and has 125 built-in designs and 5 lettering fonts.
Futura XL-400 hoop size and embroidery area
The Futura XL-400 can stitch a design up to 10 × 6 in (260 × 160 mm) in one hooping, which is the 6 × 10 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.
In the box: Large snap-on hoop (about 10.2 × 6.3 in) (10 × 6 in (260 × 160 mm)), Small snap-on hoop (4 × 4 in) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).
Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the Futura XL-400 use?
The Futura XL-400 reads .FHE, .CHE, .XXX, .PSW, .PEC, .PES, .HUS, .SEW, .EXP, .DST and .PCS files. You load designs by USB cable to a computer. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .VP3) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the Futura XL-400 is for
Fits a sewer who finds one used and wants a big 10.2 × 6.3 in field plus a full sewing machine, and is fine running older Windows software on a PC. Skip it if you want a touchscreen, loading from a USB flash drive, hats, or a machine Singer still sells.
Strengths
- Large 10.2 × 6.3 in (260 × 160 mm) hoop comes in the box, along with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) hoop for small designs
- The PC software splits designs up to 480 × 280 mm (about 19 × 11 in) into up to four sections, with alignment points for re-hooping
- Sews as well as embroiders: 30 built-in sewing stitches, including 2 one-step buttonholes, with a stitch width up to 7 mm
- Gives 8¼ in (210 mm) of space to the right of the needle, handy for quilts and other bulky projects
- Software and a USB cable are included, with 125 designs, 5 lettering fonts and 30 lettering frames
Limits
- No screen and no USB flash drive port: every design is sent from a Windows PC over the USB cable, and a US dealer lists the software for Windows XP through 8 only
- Discontinued: Singer's US site no longer lists it, so you will mostly find it used or as old dealer stock
- Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
- Singer lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats
Good to know: Singer's manual for this model (filed on Singer's support site under SKU SEQS-6000.CL as the Futura XL-400) does not list hoop sizes, file formats or design counts. Those come from Singer's two-page Features and Benefits sheet, which a US dealer hosts: hoops of 260 × 160 mm and 100 × 100 mm, multi-hoop designs up to 480 × 280 mm, 125 designs, 5 fonts and 30 sewing stitches. We give Singer's size order as width × height, and the sheet does not say whether 260 × 160 mm is the stitch area or the outer frame. A dealer page writes the large hoop as 6.23 × 10.23 in; we use Singer's millimeters. The 125 designs and 5 fonts live in the PC software, not on the machine, which has only lights and buttons. The manual gives the machine's mass as 10.8 kg (23.8 lb) plus 3.0 kg for the embroidery unit, while the dealer lists about 22.75 lb; that spec block is headed for the European version. The manual lists no file formats and only says the software resizes imported designs between 51% and 149%. A UK Singer parts dealer says the bundled software converts XXX, PSW, PEC, PES, HUS, SEW, EXP and DST, and that PCS, FHE and CHE work too. Per the manual, start the PC first, attach the hoop you will use, then open the software, and restart the PC when you switch from the small hoop to the large one. The dealer's bundle adds thread, stabilizer and extra designs that Singer does not ship. No source we found names the model it replaced or the one that followed it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the embroidery size of the Singer Futura XL-400?
Singer lists two snap-on hoops: a large 260 × 160 mm (about 10.2 × 6.3 in) and a small 100 × 100 mm (4 × 4 in). Both come with the machine. Multi-hooping in the PC software can reach designs up to 480 × 280 mm by stitching them in sections.
What file formats does the Singer Futura XL-400 use, and how do I load designs?
The machine does not read files itself. You open designs in Singer's Futura software on a Windows PC and send them over the USB cable. A UK Singer parts dealer says the bundled software converts XXX, PSW, PEC, PES, HUS, SEW, EXP and DST files, and that PCS, FHE and CHE work too.
Is the Singer SEQS-6000 the same as the Futura XL-400?
Yes, going by the sources we found. Singer's support site files the XL-400 manual under SEQS-6000, and the dealer page says the XL-400 is the same as model SEQS-6000. The dealer sells it as the Futura XL-400 Quartet.
Is there a magnetic hoop for the Singer Futura XL-400?
We found none listed by Singer. The machine comes with two snap-on hoops that slide onto a mounting plate on the embroidery unit, so any third-party magnetic hoop would need to fit that plate and one of the two sizes. Ask the seller to confirm before you buy.
Is the Singer Futura XL-400 still sold new?
No. Singer's US embroidery machine list does not include it, and the dealer page we checked shows it out of stock. If you buy one used, make sure both hoops, the USB cable and the software disc come with it.
