Estimated stitches = design area (sq in) × share that is stitched × stitches per square inch. We use 200–500 per sq in for light work, 500–900 for medium and 1000–1400 for dense fill, and show the range.

Frequently asked questions

How many stitches are in an embroidery design?

It depends on size and how much is filled. As a rule of thumb, densely filled areas run about 1,000–1,400 stitches per square inch, and outlines or text far fewer. A typical 3.5 in left-chest logo is often several thousand stitches.

Why does my design file show a different stitch count?

The file shows the real count, which depends on how it was digitized: underlay, density, stitch length and travel stitches. This tool is for estimating before a design exists, for quoting or planning.

How long does embroidery take to stitch?

Divide the stitch count by the machine speed, then allow for slowdowns, trims and colour changes. Real-world speed is often well below the maximum on the spec sheet.

Where these numbers come from

These are rules of thumb from thread makers, digitizers and embroidery educators. Real results depend on how the design is digitized. Checked 2026-10-15.
