5 × 12 in embroidery hoop (130 × 300 mm)
A multi-position frame size, 130 × 300 mm (5 × 12 in). Brother's SA445 has three pegs, so you move the frame through three positions to build a long design without re-hooping. On a 5 × 7 in machine each section is still limited to 5 × 7 in.
A 5 × 12 in hoop gives about 60.5 square inches of stitch area: 5 × 12 in (130 × 300 mm). 30 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.
What fits in a 5 × 12 in hoop
- Long borders and banners built from 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) sections, up to about 11 in (280 mm) in total
- Table-runner ends, scarf ends and sash designs
- Pillowcase and sheet-hem borders
- Up to three small designs in a row, such as three 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) motifs, without re-hooping
- Long lines of lettering split across the sections
Needs a bigger hoop
- Any single design larger than the machine's own field: a 5 × 7 in machine stitches 5 × 7 in per position
- Designs wider than about 5 in (130 mm) across the strip
- Jacket-back and full-front designs, which need a bigger machine field
Good to know: Brother's SA445 page names a 5 × 12 in embroidery area and says its three pegs let you move the frame through sections to enlarge the design area without re-hooping the fabric. It lists the Designio DZ820E, Innov-ís 1000, 1200, 1250D and NS1150E, the PE700, PE700II, PE750D, PE770 and PE780D, and the Simplicity by Brother SB7900E. Embird lists a Brother "Jumbo (large)" hoop at 130 × 300 mm (5.1 × 11.8 in). This is a frame size, not a machine field. Echidna Sewing's list of Brother maximum fields shows no model with a 130 × 300 mm field. On a 5 × 7 in machine each design is still limited to the 5 × 7 in field, so you split a long design into sections or combine smaller designs, and the frame holds the fabric between positions. Only a machine with a field of 130 × 300 mm or more can stitch the full length in one go, and those are the machines in the table below.
Standard placements that fit at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, quilt block, patch. See the design size chart.

Frequently asked questions
What is a 5x12 embroidery hoop?
It is a long frame, listed at 130 × 300 mm (5.1 × 11.8 in) by Embird for Brother. Brother's SA445 version has three pegs, so you move the frame through sections to cover a long strip without re-hooping the fabric.
Can a 5x7 machine stitch a 5x12 design in one piece?
No. The machine's maximum field limits each section to 5 × 7 in. The frame lets you stitch a long design in sections or line up several small designs. Only a machine with a field of at least 130 × 300 mm can stitch a 12 in design in one piece.
Which Brother machines work with the SA445 5x12 hoop?
Brother's page lists the Designio DZ820E, Innov-ís 1000, 1200, 1250D and NS1150E, the PE700, PE700II, PE750D, PE770 and PE780D, and the Simplicity by Brother SB7900E. Check the page for your exact model.
Does a Brother PE800 take a 5x12 hoop?
Brother's PE800 manual lists a 12 × 5 in multi-position frame as an optional accessory, but the SA445 page does not name the PE800 in its model list. Confirm the part number in your manual or with a Brother dealer before you buy.
