Brother Stellaire XE1: hoop size, file formats and specs
Also written: Stellaire XE1, Stellaire Innov-is XE1, Innov-is XE1, Innov-ís XE1
Brother's first-generation Stellaire embroidery-only machine (2019). It has a 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) field, 727 built-in designs, a 10.1 in touchscreen, up to 1,050 stitches per minute and wifi. It does not sew, and Brother lists no cap frame.
The Brother Stellaire XE1 is a embroidery-only machine with a 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .PHX, .DST, .PEN files and gets designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and has 727 built-in designs and 24 lettering fonts.
XE1 hoop size and embroidery area
The XE1 can stitch a design up to 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) in one hooping, which is the 9.5 × 14 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.
In the box: 9.5" × 14" hoop (extra large) (9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm)), 5" × 7" hoop (large) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)).
Optional from Brother: 4" × 4" hoop (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), 9.5" × 9.5" hoop (9.5 × 9.5 in (240 × 240 mm)), 8" × 12" hoop (8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm)), 7" × 12" magnetic frame (7 × 12 in (180 × 300 mm)), 8" × 8" hoop (8 × 8 in (200 × 200 mm)), 6" × 6" hoop (5.9 × 5.9 in (150 × 150 mm)), Border frame (about 4" × 12") (4 × 12 in (100 × 300 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).
Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, full front, full back, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the XE1 use?
The XE1 reads .PES, .PHC, .PHX, .DST and .PEN files. You load designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and the Artspira app works with it. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the XE1 is for
A fit for serious hobbyists and home businesses that want a very large single-needle field and wifi. Skip it if you want one machine that also sews (Brother's XJ1 adds sewing) or need a multi-needle machine for production.
Strengths
- 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) field, with 9.5 × 14 in and 5 × 7 in hoops in the box
- Embroiders at up to 1,050 stitches per minute
- 10.1 in color touchscreen with a realistic preview, plus the My Design Snap camera app for placing designs
- 727 built-in designs (101 of them Disney/Pixar) and 24 fonts
- Wifi and two USB ports, and it reads five file types (PES, PHC, PHX, DST and PEN)
Limits
- Embroidery only: it does not sew
- Single needle, so you change thread color by hand
- Brother lists no cap frame, so it is not set up for finished hats
- Needs about 36 × 21 in (916 × 524 mm) of table space with the embroidery unit attached
Good to know: Brother's manual (product code 882-W80/W82) names each frame by height and width in centimeters, such as H 36 × W 24 cm for the largest one, and does not print a separate stitch area in millimeters. The field here is 240 × 360 mm, to match the 9.5 × 14 in embroidery area on Brother's US page and the Stellaire2 XE2. The XE1 is the 2019 first-generation Stellaire, and the XJ1 is its sewing sibling. Brother's US page still lists the XE1 with no price and a Locate a Dealer button, and Brother's product data marks it as new. One large dealer lists it as discontinued and out of stock, so check stock before you plan around it. Brother's brochure and US page put the 9.5 × 14 in and 5 × 7 in frames in the box. The manual's list of frames included in some regions also shows a 4 × 4 in frame, so it is listed here as optional. The 8 × 12, 8 × 8, 6 × 6 and 1 × 2.5 in frames and the border frame work for general embroidery but not with the My Design Snap app. The 7 × 12 in magnetic frame is optional: Brother's update addendum for the XE1 and XJ1 manuals gives it as 300 mm tall × 180 mm wide, and Brother's US page for the XE1/XJ1 upgrade kit lists a magnetic frame of about that size. Brother's US page also lists a 5 × 7 in magnetic frame (SAMF180) for the XE1, but it does not publish that frame's stitch area, so it is not listed above. Brother's US page and manual list no cap frame. The brochure's opening text says over 725 built-in designs, while its spec table and Brother's US page say 727. The manual gives about 33.1 lb (15 kg) for the machine alone, and the US page gives 33.7 lb.
