Also written: BLPF, Babylock Pathfinder, Baby Lock Pathfinder BLPF, Pathfinder embroidery machine

The Baby Lock Pathfinder is a embroidery-only machine with a 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .PEC, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer, and has 263 built-in designs and 19 lettering fonts.

Pathfinder hoop size and embroidery area

The Pathfinder can stitch a design up to 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) in one hooping, which is the 8 × 12 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 8 × 12 in hoop and grid (8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm)), 5 × 7 in hoop and grid (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)).

Optional from Baby Lock: 8 × 8 in hoop and grid (EF91) (8 × 8 in (200 × 200 mm)), 6 × 6 in hoop and grid (BLMA-150) (5.9 × 5.9 in (150 × 150 mm)), 4 × 4 in hoop and grid (EF74) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), 1 × 2-1/2 in hoop and grid (EF73) (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)), 4 × 7 in continuous border hoop and grid (BLSO-BF) (4 × 7 in (100 × 180 mm)), 4 × 12 in large continuous border hoop and grid (BLMA-CBH) (4 × 12 in (100 × 300 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, full front, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the Pathfinder use?

The Pathfinder reads .PES, .PHC, .PEC and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the Pathfinder is for

A home embroiderer or small seller who wants a large single-needle field for big designs, quilt blocks and border runs, and who already has a separate machine for sewing. Skip it if you want Wi-Fi, hats, or a machine that also sews.

Strengths

  • 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) embroidery field, with the 8 × 12 in and 5 × 7 in hoops both in the box
  • Stitches up to 1,050 stitches per minute, with an automatic thread cutter and the NeverMiss automatic needle threader
  • 263 built-in designs, 140 frame combinations and 19 built-in fonts
  • 7 in (diagonal) color touchscreen, plus a sensor pen and an LED needle beam to place designs on the fabric
  • Baby Lock sells more hoops for it, from 1 × 2-1/2 in up to 8 × 8 in, plus 4 × 7 in and 4 × 12 in continuous border hoops

Limits

  • Embroidery only: it does not sew regular seams, so you need a second machine for sewing
  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • No Wi-Fi listed; designs come in through a USB port or a USB cable
  • Baby Lock lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: Baby Lock's product page and spec sheet agree on the 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) field, 263 built-in designs, 140 frame combinations, 19 fonts, 1,050 stitches per minute and two USB ports (one Type A, one Type B). The product page says two hoops are included without naming them; the spec sheet names them as the 8 × 12 in and 5 × 7 in hoops, each with a grid, and lists a USB cable in the box. Baby Lock's accessory pages list the 8 × 8, 6 × 6, 4 × 4, 1 × 2-1/2 in, 4 × 7 in border and 4 × 12 in border hoops as compatible; Baby Lock does not say which way round the hoops are attached, so widths and heights follow the order Baby Lock prints. Baby Lock gives the weight as 30.6 lb for the machine alone and 39.1 lb with the embroidery unit; 39.1 is used here, and one dealer lists 35 lb. Baby Lock's two cap frame sets (EPCF3 and EPCF-B) list other machines as compatible, not the Pathfinder, and its Pathfinder page shows no cap frame, so capFrame is false. The product page lists no companion app, no wireless and no release year, and it does not say the Pathfinder replaces another model. Baby Lock's page shows no machine price. Dealers show prices well below a crossed-out regular price, and the range here comes from two dealer listings for a new machine, leaving out a floor-model listing; Baby Lock sells through authorized dealers, so prices and bundles vary.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Baby Lock Pathfinder?

The embroidery field is 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm). The 8 × 12 in hoop comes in the box, so you can stitch one design up to that size in a single hooping. The Pathfinder embroiders only and does not sew.

What hoops come with the Baby Lock Pathfinder?

Two: an 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) hoop and a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) hoop, each with a grid. Baby Lock sells 8 × 8 in, 6 × 6 in, 4 × 4 in and 1 × 2-1/2 in hoops for it, plus 4 × 7 in and 4 × 12 in continuous border hoops.

What embroidery file formats does the Baby Lock Pathfinder read?

Baby Lock lists .pes, .phc, .pec and .dst files. You can load them from a USB flash drive in the Type A port or send them over a USB cable in the Type B port.

Does the Baby Lock Pathfinder have Wi-Fi?

Baby Lock lists no wireless for it. It has two USB ports: Type A for a flash drive and Type B for a cable to a computer, and a USB cable comes in the box.

Can the Baby Lock Pathfinder embroider hats?

Baby Lock lists no cap frame for the Pathfinder. Its cap frame sets name other machines as compatible, not this one, so it is not set up for finished caps. Ask a Baby Lock dealer before you plan around hats.
