Brother SE1900: hoop size, file formats and specs
Also written: SE-1900, SE 1900
A 5 × 7 in sewing and embroidery combo that Brother has discontinued. It has a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field, 138 built-in designs, 240 sewing stitches and a knee lifter, but no Wi-Fi: designs come in by USB flash drive.
The Brother SE1900 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 138 built-in designs.
Newer model: The SE1900 has been replaced by the Brother SE2000. See what changed
SE1900 hoop size and embroidery area
The SE1900 can stitch a design up to 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5 × 7 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.
In the box: 5" × 7" hoop (large) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)).
Optional from Brother: Extra large multi-position frame (about 5" × 12", three attach positions; each section 5" × 7") (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)), 4" × 7" magnetic hoop (4 × 7 in (100 × 180 mm)), 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

What file format does the SE1900 use?
The SE1900 reads .PES, .PHC and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the SE1900 is for
Someone looking for a used or leftover 5 × 7 in combo machine who is happy to move designs by USB. Anyone who wants Wi-Fi, an app or a machine Brother still sells new should look at the SE2000.
Strengths
- 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) embroidery field, with the 5 × 7 in hoop included
- 138 built-in embroidery designs and 240 sewing stitches
- Reads .pes, .phc and .dst files from a USB flash drive
- A knee lifter comes in the box
- Brother lists extra frames for it: 4 × 4 in, small, extra large multi-position and a 4 × 7 in magnetic hoop
Limits
- Brother has discontinued it and its US page shows it out of stock
- No Wi-Fi, so designs move by USB flash drive only
- Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
- Brother lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats
Good to know: The font count is left empty: Brother's page says 11 built-in fonts in its description but lists 6 alphabet fonts in its specs, and its design guide shows 11 font names. The design count is 138 as Brother states it in its feature list; another entry on the same page says 136. The text of Brother's manual gives no stitches-per-minute figure for embroidery, so that is empty too. The screen is listed by Brother as 3 × 1.6 in (width × height), so no diagonal is given. The multi-position frame is used by moving it between three positions and stitching a split design in sections; each section is still 5 × 7 in. That the SE2000 replaced it comes from a retailer listing, not from Brother.
How the SE1900 compares
- Brother SE2000 vs SE1900: SE2000 has a 5 × 7 in field.
- Brother PE900 vs SE1900: PE900 has a 5 × 7 in field and only embroiders.
