Embroidery machines for beginners
Most beginners do best with a single-needle home machine that has a 4 × 4 or 5 × 7 inch embroidery field. It is easy to thread, cheap to run, and big enough for names, patches and small logos. If the budget allows, choose 5 × 7: it is the size most people wish they had bought after a few months.
How to choose
| Embroidery field | A 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field handles most first projects; 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) is fine for names, monograms and patches. |
|---|---|
| Ease of use | Automatic needle threader, a clear touch screen and on-screen editing (rotate, resize, add text) save a lot of frustration. |
| Getting designs in | Every modern machine takes a USB stick. Wi-Fi and a phone app are handy but optional. |
| Sewing too? | A combo machine also sews. It saves space, but you cannot sew and embroider at the same time. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a 4 × 4 hoop enough for a beginner?
For names, monograms, small patches and baby items, yes. Most people move to 5 × 7 when they want bigger designs on shirts, tote bags or towels, so buy 5 × 7 if you can.
Should a beginner buy a sewing and embroidery combo machine?
If you also want to sew and have limited space, a combo machine makes sense. If you mainly want to embroider, an embroidery-only machine puts the money into the embroidery features.
Do I need embroidery software to start?
No. Beginner machines come with built-in designs and fonts, and you can load ready-made designs from a USB stick. Software is only needed to create or heavily edit designs.
What else do I need besides the machine?
Stabilizer, embroidery thread, bobbin thread, the right needles and a pair of small curved scissors. Budget roughly $50–$100 for a starter set.
