5 × 7 in embroidery hoop (130 × 180 mm)

The most common home-machine hoop size, quoted as 130 × 180 mm (5 × 7 in) by Brother and Baby Lock. It fits chest designs, towel monograms and quilt blocks, and matches the size many commercial design packs are sold in.

A 5 × 7 in hoop gives about 36.3 square inches of stitch area: 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm). 74 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.

What fits in a 5 × 7 in hoop

Shirt-front and polo chest designs up to about 5 × 7 in (127 × 178 mm)
Towel and tea-towel monograms up to about 5 in (127 mm) wide
Quilt-block and in-the-hoop projects up to about 5 × 7 in (127 × 178 mm)
Commercial design packs sold as 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm), a size Singer says many designs use
Portrait designs such as a stacked name and icon, up to about 4.9 × 6.9 in (125 × 175 mm)

Needs a bigger hoop

Good to know: Brother and Baby Lock quote 130 × 180 mm (about 5.1 × 7.1 in) for a 5 × 7 in hoop. Baby Lock's EPF180 hoop is labeled 5⅛ × 7⅛ in with the same 130 × 180 mm. Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff list a "large" hoop at 130 × 180 mm too. Janome does not use this size. Its RE20b hoop for the Memory Craft 400E, 500E and 550E is 5.5 × 7.9 in (140 × 200 mm), and its RE20a hoop is 170 × 200 mm. Singer sells a 5 × 7 in hoop as an optional extra for the SE300, SE340 and EM200. Published stitch-field figures vary. Some sites list a 5 × 7 hoop as exactly 127 × 178 mm and others as about 4.9 × 6.9 in. Keep designs a few millimeters inside the field and trust your machine's manual. The short side is 130 mm. Brother's support pages describe the machine offering to rotate a too-large design 90 degrees, and a landscape design 170 mm wide by 125 mm tall only fits once it is turned. For longer work, Brother's SA445 is a 5 × 12 in hoop with three pegs. Its page says you can shift the hoop through sections to extend the design area without re-hooping. The machine's own maximum area still applies to each section.

What size is a 5x7 embroidery hoop in mm?

Brother and Baby Lock list the stitch area as 130 × 180 mm. Janome's closest hoop is 140 × 200 mm, so the numbers differ by brand.

Which embroidery machines have a 5x7 hoop?

Brother Australia lists the Innov-is F540E at 130 × 180 mm, and brother-usa.com lists a 5 × 7 in maximum area for older models such as the PE800 (marked discontinued). Baby Lock sells a 5 × 7 in hoop (EF75) for many of its machines.

Can a 4x4 machine use a 5x7 hoop?

No, unless the maker lists that hoop for your model. The hoop has to match the machine's maximum embroidery area, and Brother and Baby Lock publish a compatibility list for each hoop.

Is a 5x7 hoop big enough for a full 5 × 7 inch design?

It depends on the brand. Brother's 130 × 180 mm area holds a 5 × 7 in (127 × 178 mm) design, but some hoops have a slightly smaller stitch field, so a design that measures exactly 5 × 7 in may be rejected. Compare the design in millimeters with your manual.
