Brother PE770: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: PE-770, PE 770

Older embroidery-only machine with a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field, 136 built-in designs and up to 650 stitches per minute. It has a monochrome touch screen and reads .pes and .dst files from a USB stick. Brother US lists it as discontinued.

The Brother PE770 is a discontinued embroidery-only machine with a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or Memory card, and has 136 built-in designs and 6 lettering fonts.

PE770 hoop size and embroidery area

The PE770 can stitch a design up to 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5 × 7 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 5" × 7" hoop (large) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Multi-position hoop (12" × 5" frame, stitches 5" × 7" per position) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)), 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

What file format does the PE770 use?

The PE770 reads .PES and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick or Memory card. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the PE770 is for

A fit for someone buying used who wants a 5 × 7 in field and does not mind a black-and-white screen. Skip it if you want a color screen, wireless transfer, or .phc file support.

Strengths

  • 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field, with the matching 5 × 7 in hoop in the box
  • Up to 650 stitches per minute, with a slower 350 setting you can choose
  • 136 built-in designs, 120 frame combinations (10 shapes × 12 stitch types) and 6 lettering fonts
  • USB port, built-in memory and an embroidery card slot for extra designs
  • Automatic needle threading, quick-set bobbin and automatic thread cutter

Limits

  • Small monochrome (black-and-white) touch screen, so you cannot preview designs in color
  • Reads only .pes and .dst files, not .phc
  • No wireless transfer and no app
  • Brother US lists it as discontinued

Good to know: Brother's US page headline calls it a sewing and embroidery machine, but Brother's sell sheet and manual describe an embroidery-only machine. The sell sheet gives the screen as 1.4 × 2.7 in monochrome while a retailer lists 1.6 × 3 in, so screen size is left empty. Brother's USB-feature manual for this model lists only .pes and .dst. The manual lists an optional 12 × 5 in multi-position frame (part SA445) for combined designs, but limits each design to the 7 × 5 in field, so the field stays 5 × 7 in. Brother lists the same hoop part numbers (SA442, SA443, SA444, SA445) for the PE770 and PE800. No weight is published. Brother does not name a successor in the sources checked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest hoop for the Brother PE770?

The 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) hoop in the box is the largest design size. Brother also lists a 12 × 5 in multi-position frame for combined designs, but the manual limits each design to the 7 × 5 in field.

What file formats does the Brother PE770 read?

It reads .pes and .dst files from a USB flash drive. Brother's USB manual for the machine does not list .phc. DST files show as file names only, without a picture.

Can the Brother PE770 embroider hats?

Brother lists no cap frame for the PE770. Its hoops are flat frames (5 × 7 in, 4 × 4 in, small and multi-position), so it is not set up for finished caps.

Is the Brother PE770 good for beginners?

It has automatic needle threading, a quick-set bobbin and an automatic thread cutter, which help new users. The limits are the small monochrome screen and no wireless transfer.

Brother PE770 or PE800?

Both stitch up to 5 × 7 in at up to 650 stitches per minute with a 5 × 7 in hoop in the box. The PE800 has a color touch screen (the PE770's is monochrome), 11 fonts against 6 and 138 designs against 136, and it also reads .phc files. The PE770 has an embroidery card slot. Brother US lists both as discontinued.
