Brother Luminaire XP3: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: Luminaire 3 XP3, Luminaire 3 Innov-ís XP3, Luminaire 3 Innov-is XP3, Innov-ís XP3, Innov-is XP3, XP3

A high-end Brother sewing, embroidery and quilting combo. It has a 10 5/8 × 16 in (272 × 408 mm) embroidery field, four hoops in the box, 1,554 built-in designs, 869 stitches, a stitch-preview projector and Wi-Fi. The price is the main limit.

The Brother Luminaire XP3 is a sewing and embroidery machine with a 10.7 × 16.1 in (272 × 408 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .PHX, .DST, .PEN files and gets designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and has 1554 built-in designs and 28 lettering fonts.

Luminaire XP3 hoop size and embroidery area

The Luminaire XP3 can stitch a design up to 10.7 × 16.1 in (272 × 408 mm) in one hooping, which is the 9.5 × 14 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), 5" × 7" hoop (large) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)), 10 5/8" × 10 5/8" hoop (10.7 × 10.7 in (272 × 272 mm)), 10 5/8" × 16" hoop (LL) (10.7 × 16.1 in (272 × 408 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, full front, full back, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the Luminaire XP3 use?

The Luminaire XP3 reads .PES, .PHC, .PHX, .DST and .PEN files. You load designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and the Artspira app works with it. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the Luminaire XP3 is for

A fit for serious hobbyists, quilters and home businesses that want very large embroidery and full sewing on one machine. Skip it if you only stitch small designs, want a low price, or need a multi-needle machine for volume.

Strengths

  • A 10 5/8 × 16 in (272 × 408 mm) embroidery field, a large area for big designs and quilt blocks
  • Four hoops come in the box: 4 × 4 in, 5 × 7 in, 10 5/8 × 10 5/8 in and 10 5/8 × 16 in
  • 1,554 built-in embroidery designs, 869 built-in sewing stitches and 16 buttonhole styles
  • StitchVision projects a preview of stitches and designs onto the fabric, and guideline projection helps with hems and quilting
  • Wireless LAN sends designs from a PC, and the machine works with the Artspira and My Stitch Monitor apps

Limits

  • Priced far above Brother's smaller-field home machines, and sold through dealers rather than direct
  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • Heavy at about 43 lb (19.6 kg), so it needs a sturdy table
  • Brother's product page, in-box accessory sheet and support-site accessory list show no cap frame, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: Brother's in-box accessory sheet gives each hoop's height and width: 100 × 100, 180 × 130, 272 × 272 and 408 × 272 mm (height × width), which Brother's US page writes as 4 × 4, 5 × 7, 10 5/8 × 10 5/8 and 10 5/8 × 16 in. The field and hoops above follow those labels, so the largest hoop is 272 mm wide and 408 mm tall. Brother's support site lists optional magnetic frames for the XP3, and the pages for the 5 × 7 in (SAMF180) and 10 × 10 in (SAMS254) frames name the XP3, but Brother publishes no stitch area for them, so they are not listed above. Brother's own pages show a 10.1 in color touchscreen (Brother Canada) and 1,050 stitches per minute for embroidery (Brother Australia). Brother Australia lists 28 built-in embroidery fonts, 26 alphabet and 2 Cyrillic, and one US dealer gives the same 28; Brother's US page gives only 3 sewing lettering fonts. Brother's US page lists no file types. Brother's help pages list PES, PHC, DST and PEN for its machines, and PHX only for the Luminaire models including the XP3. Brother's US page gives 869 stitches, while Brother Australia and some dealers list 824, so check the count if it matters. Brother's XP1 and XP2 pages are marked Discontinued, and Brother Canada and Brother Australia mark the XP3 as discontinued too. Brother's US page still shows the XP3 with a list price and a Locate a Dealer button and no discontinued label, so it is kept as current here. One US dealer page says it is discontinued and replaced by the Brother Aveneer, yet also says it is back for a limited time, so check stock with a dealer. The price range above is Brother's US list price; dealers may differ.
