Singer's embroidery-only home machine, now discontinued. It stitches up to 10¼ × 6 in (260 × 150 mm) and comes with that hoop plus a 4 × 4 in one. It reads .xxx and .dst from USB. Only 69 designs are built in, it has two fonts, and there is no cap frame.

The Singer EM200 is a discontinued embroidery-only machine with a 10 × 5.9 in (260 × 150 mm) embroidery field. It reads .XXX, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 69 built-in designs and 2 lettering fonts.

EM200 hoop size and embroidery area

The EM200 can stitch a design up to 10 × 5.9 in (260 × 150 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5.5 × 8 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 10¼ × 6 in hoop (large) (10 × 5.9 in (260 × 150 mm)), 4 × 4 in hoop (small) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Singer: 5 × 7 in hoop (optional) (7 × 5 in (178 × 127 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the EM200 use?

The EM200 reads .XXX and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the EM200 is for

A fit for someone who already sews on another machine and wants a separate embroidery-only unit with a wide field for name banners, towels and quilt blocks. Skip it if you need PES or JEF files, finished hats, or a machine Singer still sells new.

Strengths

  • Wide field for a home machine: the included large hoop is 10¼ × 6 in (260 × 150 mm)
  • Two hoops in the box, the 10¼ × 6 in one and a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) hoop for small designs
  • Stitches up to 700 stitches per minute, with tracing and a basting box to help with placement
  • Cuts both threads when a design or color ends, and has an automatic needle threader
  • Singer lists an optional 5 × 7 in hoop designed for use with it

Limits

  • Only 69 designs are built in. Singer's "200 designs" counts 131 more that sit on the included USB stick
  • The manual lists only .xxx and .dst files, so PES, JEF and other formats need converting first
  • Just 2 lettering fonts, each in 3 sizes
  • Single needle, so you re-thread by hand at every color change
  • Singer lists no cap frame, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: Singer's manual gives the hoops as 260 × 150 mm and 100 × 100 mm and says the machine picks the hoop that suits the design you choose. This site uses the hoop size as the stitch field, which matches the 10¼ × 6 in embroidery area on a US dealer's spec table. The 7⅞ in work area in Singer's ads is the space between the needle and the tower, not the field. Singer's manual counts 69 built-in designs and puts the rest of the 200 on the USB stick. The ads call it 6 alphabets, but the manual shows 2 fonts in 3 sizes each. The manual calls the top speed 700 rpm, and the dealer copy of Singer's specs says 700 stitches per minute. Singer's page for the optional 5 × 7 in hoop gives no metric size, so 178 × 127 mm is a conversion from inches. The screen size is not given in the manual or on the dealer page, and neither says whether it is a color screen. The manual does not list a cap frame. Singer offers PC software for this machine at singer.mysewnet.com to bring in designs from other sources. Singer's US shop no longer lists the EM200 with its embroidery machines, and a large US dealer tags it as discontinued and shows it out of stock.

What embroidery file formats does the Singer EM200 read?

Is the Singer EM200 discontinued, and does it sew?

It appears to be discontinued: Singer's US shop no longer lists it with its embroidery machines, and a large US dealer shows it as out of stock under discontinued products. It is embroidery only and does not sew, so you need a separate machine for sewing.
