Janome MB-4S: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: MB4S, MB 4S, MB-4Se, MB4Se

Janome's single-head, four-needle embroidery machine for home use. It stitches a 9.4 × 7.9 in (240 × 200 mm) field at up to 800 stitches per minute, reads JEF, JEF+ and DST, and takes Tajima-style hoops. A 5.7 in remote screen runs it.

The Janome MB-4S is a 4-needle embroidery machine with a 9.5 × 8 in (240 × 200 mm) embroidery field. It reads .JEF, .JEF+, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer, and has 50 built-in designs and 10 lettering fonts.

MB-4S hoop size and embroidery area

The MB-4S can stitch a design up to 9.5 × 8 in (240 × 200 mm) in one hooping, which is the 8 × 8 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

What file format does the MB-4S use?

The MB-4S reads .JEF, .JEF+ and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the MB-4S is for

Suits people who stitch several colors per design, or caps and shirts, and want fewer thread changes than a one-needle machine. Not for anyone who needs a field wider than 9.4 in (240 mm) or wants a machine that also sews.

Strengths

  • Four needles: load four thread colors at once and skip most manual re-threading
  • Reads DST as well as JEF and JEF+, so industry-style designs load without conversion
  • Up to 800 stitches per minute, with automatic trimming of jump threads, even between letters
  • Optional hat hoop, plus lettering hoops and a sock hoop kit, and it takes Tajima-style hoops
  • Jumbo bobbin 1.4 times larger than a standard one, and it can wind a new bobbin while stitching

Limits

  • Embroidery only: it cannot sew
  • Single head: one hooped item at a time
  • Field is 9.4 × 7.9 in (240 × 200 mm), smaller than what many home combo machines now offer
  • Weighs about 45 lb and needs a stable table; there is no needle threader

Good to know: Still listed on Janome's US site; Janome's Canadian page marks it discontinued, so check availability if you are buying outside the US. Janome does not show a newer MB-4 model in the US, and the MB-7 (seven needles) is a separate, larger machine. Janome writes the maximum area as 9.4 × 7.9 in (238 × 200 mm) in its spec list while naming the M1 hoop 240 × 200 mm; the M1 size is used here. Dealers sometimes write the name as MB-4Se. The older MB-4 was upgraded to the MB-4S, but the MB-4 has no file in this guide, so replaces is left empty. The hat hoop is optional and its stitch area was not confirmed.
