Ricoma EM-1010: hoop size, file formats and specs
Also written: EM-1010, EM1010, EM 1010, Ricoma 1010, EM-1010-10s
Ricoma's 10-needle machine with a 12.2 × 8.3 in (310 × 210 mm) field, up to 1,000 stitches per minute and a 10.1 in touchscreen. A cap driver and two cap rings come in the box. It reads DST files only, and Ricoma gives no cap stitch area.
The Ricoma EM-1010 is a 10-needle embroidery machine with a 12.2 × 8.3 in (310 × 210 mm) embroidery field. It reads .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer or Wi-Fi.
EM-1010 hoop size and embroidery area
The EM-1010 can stitch a design up to 12.2 × 8.3 in (310 × 210 mm) in one hooping, which is the 8 × 12 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.
In the box: Hoop A (2.7 × 1.9 in) (2.7 × 1.9 in (69 × 48 mm)), Hoop B (4.3 × 4.3 in) (4.3 × 4.3 in (109 × 109 mm)), Hoop C (7.5 × 5.5 in) (7.5 × 5.5 in (191 × 140 mm)), Hoop D (12.2 × 8.2 in) (12.2 × 8.2 in (310 × 208 mm)).
Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, full front, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the EM-1010 use?
The EM-1010 reads .DST files. You load designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer or Wi-Fi. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the EM-1010 is for
A hobbyist moving up to a multi-needle machine, or a small shop that wants ten colors loaded at once, a large field and hat embroidery in one package. Skip it if you only stitch small designs on a tight budget, since single-needle machines cost far less.
Strengths
- Ten needles hold ten thread colors at once, so you change thread far less often than on a single-needle machine
- 12.2 × 8.3 in (310 × 210 mm) embroidery field, with four hoops in the box from 2.7 × 1.9 in up to 12.2 × 8.2 in
- Runs at up to 1,000 stitches per minute
- A cap driver, two cap rings and a hooping station come in the box, and Ricoma lists 220° cap rotation
- 10.1 in color touchscreen, memory for 100 million stitches or 1,000 designs, and 12 months of Ricoma's Chroma software included
Limits
- Ricoma lists only DST as a file format, and DST files carry no thread colors, so you set the colors on the machine
- Heavy at 99 lb (45 kg), and the stand is sold separately
- Ricoma gives no built-in design count, font count or cap stitch area on its page
- Costs several times more than a single-needle home machine
Good to know: Ricoma's page gives sizes in inches only; the mm values here are conversions (Ricoma's own Creator page shows 8.3 in as 210 mm). The four hoop sizes read as stitch areas, since the largest, 12.2 × 8.2 in, is almost the full 12.2 × 8.3 in field. Ricoma's spec list says connection is by USB or Ethernet, while its feature text also mentions Wi-Fi for wireless design transfers; Ethernet is filed under cable here. Ricoma does not publish a cap stitch area, so no cap frame size is listed. Optional frames on Ricoma's site include Mighty Hoops magnetic hoops in 14 advertised frame sizes (the stitch area is slightly smaller than the advertised size, so none are listed here), a hoopless multi-frame kit and a belt hoop. Ricoma sells the machine direct in Core and Ultra bundles; the price range here comes from those two bundles at Ricoma's current sale pricing, and a dealer price could not be confirmed. The stand is sold separately, and Ricoma offers a 1-year standard or 5-year premium warranty. Ricoma's page calls it the EM Series 10 Needle machine, uses EM-1010-10s in its text and names no model that replaces it.
