8 × 14 in embroidery hoop (200 × 360 mm)
A long hoop with a 200 × 360 mm (7.9 × 14.2 in) stitch area. Brother lists it as 8 × 14 in on the PR1055X and PR1060W, and Janome's RE36b for the Memory Craft 550E is the same size. It suits jacket backs, banners and long borders.
A 8 × 14 in hoop gives about 111.6 square inches of stitch area: 8 × 14 in (200 × 360 mm). 22 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.
What fits in a 8 × 14 in hoop
- Jacket-back designs up to about 7.5 × 13.5 in (190 × 345 mm)
- Banners, table runners and sashing strips up to about 13.5 in (345 mm) long
- Long lines of lettering on tote bags and team jackets
- Two 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) designs side by side, both upright, in one hooping
- Three 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) designs in a row, using 300 of the 360 mm
Needs a bigger hoop
- Designs bigger than 8 × 14 in, such as the 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) field on Brother's Stellaire XE2
- Anything taller than about 7.9 in (200 mm) across the short side
- Long borders and tablecloth edges without re-hooping
Good to know: Brother's PR1055X page lists the maximum embroidery area as 8 × 14 in and gives no millimeters. Echidna Sewing's field list for Brother puts 200 × 360 mm (8 × 14 in) on the BX1, BX1e and PR1060W, and on the retired PR1000E, PR1050X and PR1055X. Embird lists Janome's RE36b for the Memory Craft 550E, Pfaff's Deluxe hoop and Viking's Royal hoop all at 200 × 360 mm (7.9 × 14.2 in). Fourteen inches is 355.6 mm, so use 200 × 360 mm when you size a design. A Hatch support article notes that Janome's inch figures for the RE36b are roundings, not the size the machine reads. Hoops about 14 in long are not all the same width: the 9.5 × 14 in hoop on Brother's Stellaire and Baby Lock's Altair is 240 × 360 mm. Brother writes this field as 14 × 8 in (wide by tall) on its multi-needle machines, so the same area can appear in either order.
Standard placements that fit at typical size: left chest, full front, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch. See the design size chart.

Frequently asked questions
What is an 8x14 embroidery hoop in mm?
It is 200 × 360 mm, or 7.9 × 14.2 in. Embird lists Janome's RE36b, Pfaff's Deluxe hoop and Viking's Royal hoop at that size, and Echidna Sewing gives 200 × 360 mm for Brother's 8 × 14 in machines.
Which machines have an 8 x 14 in embroidery field?
Brother lists 8 × 14 in on the PR1055X and PR1060W, and Echidna Sewing gives the BX1 and BX1e the same field. Janome's Memory Craft 550E has a 200 × 360 mm field with its RE36b hoop.
Is the Janome RE36b the same as a Brother 8x14 hoop?
They have the same stitch area, 200 × 360 mm, but hoops are made for specific machines. Use the hoop your maker lists for your model, not one from another brand.
Is 8x14 bigger than 9.5x14?
No. The 9.5 × 14 in hoop is 240 × 360 mm, which is 40 mm wider than 200 × 360 mm. Both are 360 mm long.
