Janome Memory Craft 400E: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: MC400E, MC 400E, 400E, 400 E, Janome 400E

Janome's entry-level embroidery-only machine: a 7.9 × 7.9 in (200 × 200 mm) field with one SQ20b hoop and an extra-wide table. It has 160 designs, 6 fonts, a color touchscreen and a top speed of 860 stitches per minute. JEF files by USB only.

The Janome Memory Craft 400E is a embroidery-only machine with a 8 × 8 in (200 × 200 mm) embroidery field. It reads .JEF files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 160 built-in designs and 6 lettering fonts.

Memory Craft 400E hoop size and embroidery area

The Memory Craft 400E can stitch a design up to 8 × 8 in (200 × 200 mm) in one hooping, which is the 8 × 8 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

Optional from Janome: RE20b hoop (8 × 5.5 in (200 × 140 mm)), SQ14b hoop (5.5 × 5.5 in (140 × 140 mm)), RE10b hoop (4 × 1.6 in (100 × 40 mm)).

Who the Memory Craft 400E is for

Fits someone who wants a Janome embroidery machine with a medium square field for home décor, garments and monograms. Not for anyone who needs a field longer than 7.9 in (200 mm), or a machine that also sews.

Strengths

  • 7.9 × 7.9 in (200 × 200 mm) field, roughly twice the area of a 4 × 4 in hoop
  • Embroiders at 400 to 860 stitches per minute with adjustable speed
  • 160 built-in designs, 6 fonts and 2 and 3 letter monogramming
  • Color touchscreen with on-screen editing, automatic thread cutter and needle threader
  • Extra-wide table and soft cover come in the box

Limits

  • Only the SQ20b hoop is included; the RE20b, SQ14b and RE10b hoops are optional extras
  • Embroidery only: it cannot sew
  • Janome's spec page lists only the JEF format, and transfer is by USB stick
  • Single needle, so each color change needs a stop and a re-thread

Good to know: Janome's US site still lists the MC400E but shows no list price and no discontinued notice; one dealer calls it discontinued, and several retailers show it out of stock, so availability varies. Machine weight was not found on a maker page, so it is left blank. The optional hat hoop is listed by Janome for this model; its stitch area was not confirmed. The RE10b hoop is 100 × 40 mm (Janome also writes it 40 × 100 mm).
