Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: Designer Epic 2, DESIGNER EPIC 2, Designer EPIC™ 2, Epic 2, Husqvarna Designer Epic 2, Viking Designer Epic 2

A high-end single-needle sewing and embroidery combo from Husqvarna Viking: 840 stitches, over 750 built-in designs, up to 1,000 stitches per minute and a 14.2 × 10.2 in (360 × 260 mm) hoop in the box. The big optional hoop, laser guide and price are the draw and the limit.

The Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2 is a sewing and embroidery machine with a 17.7 × 17.7 in (450 × 450 mm) embroidery field. It reads .VP3, .SHV, .VIP, .HUS, .PEC, .PES, .PCS, .XXX, .SEW, .JEF, .EXP, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and has 750 built-in designs.

Designer Epic 2 hoop size and embroidery area

The Designer Epic 2 can stitch a design up to 17.7 × 17.7 in (450 × 450 mm) in one hooping, which is the 9.5 × 14 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

Who the Designer Epic 2 is for

Embroiderers and quilters who want one single-needle machine for sewing and for large designs, with the optional Mega Turnable hoop for the biggest ones. Skip it if you mostly stitch small designs, want multi-needle production speed, or need a price near a typical home combo.

Strengths

  • Large embroidery space: the three hoops in the box reach 14.2 × 10.2 in (360 × 260 mm), and the optional Mega Turnable hoop lists 450 × 450 mm
  • Sews and embroiders: 840 built-in stitches and over 750 built-in embroidery designs with 31 specialty techniques
  • Embroiders at up to 1,000 stitches per minute
  • Two USB ports, plus the mySewnet design library, cloud storage and wireless updates on the machine
  • Laser sewing guide, integrated dual feed, and the mySewMonitor app lets you place a design from a photo of your hooped fabric

Limits

  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • The 450 × 450 mm hoop is not in the box, and it stitches the design in two halves with a hoop turn partway through
  • Priced in the five-figure range, far above typical home sewing and embroidery combos, and Husqvarna Viking sells it as a dealer exclusive
  • Husqvarna Viking lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: Hoop sizes are written width × height as the hoop is attached, as Husqvarna Viking lists them. The machine's own page gives the three included hoops (360 × 260, 260 × 200 and 120 × 120 mm) but no embroidery-area figure, only a "large working area" tick. The 450 × 450 mm field comes from the Mega Turnable hoop page: its FAQ names the Designer Epic 2 and 3, while its product details name only the Epic 3. That hoop stitches one half of the design, then asks you to turn the hoop 180 degrees and carries on without unhooping, so the 450 mm size needs that hoop and the in-box maximum is 360 × 260 mm. The Quilter's Metal and Mega Quilter's hoops are listed because their pages name the Epic 2. Husqvarna Viking's pages for the Majestic (360 × 350 mm), Royal and several smaller hoops say only "Designer Epic series", so they are not listed here; ask a dealer which ones fit. The machine page says it reads multiple design formats but names none, so the format list follows the Designer Ruby 90 manual from the same family; check the Epic 2 manual before relying on a rare format. The 750 designs figure is a floor, as the maker says "over 750". The page lists 6 sewing alphabets but no embroidery font count, screen size, weight or launch year, so those are left blank. The price is Husqvarna Viking's own list price for a dealer-exclusive listing; refurbished machines are priced separately and are not counted. Husqvarna Viking's pages do not say the Designer Epic 3 replaces this machine, so no successor is linked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2?

The three hoops in the box reach 14.2 × 10.2 in (360 × 260 mm). Husqvarna Viking's optional Mega Turnable hoop lists 450 × 450 mm (about 17 × 17 in) and names the Epic 2. It stitches the design in two halves and asks you to turn the hoop partway through.

What hoops come with the Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2?

Three: the Designer Imperial (360 × 260 mm), the Designer Crown (260 × 200 mm) and the Designer Splendid Square (120 × 120 mm). Husqvarna Viking also lists the Quilter's Metal (200 × 200 mm) and Mega Quilter's (260 × 260 mm) hoops as compatible.

How much does the Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2 cost?

Husqvarna Viking lists it in the five-figure range, which the price range on this page reflects. The listing is a dealer exclusive, and refurbished machines are sold separately for less, so ask a dealer for a current quote.

Can the Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2 embroider hats?

Husqvarna Viking lists no cap frame for the Epic 2, so it is not set up for finished caps. Its hoops are made for flat fabric. If hats matter to you, ask a dealer about current accessories before you buy.

How does the Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2 compare with the Designer Epic 3?

The Epic 3 lists 912 built-in designs and 871 stitches against over 750 and 840 on the Epic 2. It also comes with a larger 465 × 260 mm hoop. Both list embroidery speeds up to 1,000 stitches per minute, and both list the Mega Turnable hoop at 450 × 450 mm.
