Hoop size guide

8 × 11 in embroidery hoop (200 × 280 mm)

Janome's RE28b hoop, with a 200 × 280 mm (7.9 × 11 in) stitch area. It is the largest hoop for the Memory Craft 500E and an optional hoop for the 550E. It is 20 mm shorter than an 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) hoop.

A 8 × 11 in hoop gives about 86.8 square inches of stitch area: 8 × 11 in (200 × 280 mm). 32 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.

What fits in a 8 × 11 in hoop

  • Large chest and back designs up to about 7.5 × 10.5 in (190 × 265 mm)
  • Jacket-back designs around 6 × 10 in (160 × 260 mm), the size Singer's guide gives for a jacket back
  • Two 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) designs side by side in one hooping
  • Quilt blocks up to about 7 in (178 mm) square
  • Pillow covers, tote bags and towel ends up to about 7.5 × 10.5 in (190 × 265 mm)

Needs a bigger hoop

  • 8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm) designs, which are 20 mm too long
  • 8 × 14 in (200 × 360 mm) and 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) back designs
  • Banners and borders longer than about 10.5 in (265 mm)

Good to know: Embird lists the RE28b at 200 × 280 mm (7.9 × 11 in) for the Memory Craft 500E, and Janome's US page gives that machine's maximum embroidery size as 7.9 × 11 in. Janome lists the RE28b for the Memory Craft 500E and 550E. The Memory Craft 400E has a 200 × 200 mm field, so it cannot stitch this size. Embird lists Janome's MC11000 Macro Hoop at the same 200 × 280 mm, but that is an overlap hoop and a separate part, so check the part number. Hoops from other makers sit close but differ: Brother's 8 × 12 in field is 200 × 300 mm, and Husqvarna Viking's Crown and Pfaff's Elite hoops are 260 × 200 mm. Eleven inches is 279.4 mm, so keep designs a little under 200 × 280 mm.

Standard placements that fit at typical size: left chest, full front, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch. See the design size chart.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the Janome RE28b hoop?

It is 200 × 280 mm, or 7.9 × 11 in. Embird lists it at that size, and Janome's US page gives the Memory Craft 500E's maximum embroidery size as 7.9 × 11 in.

Which Janome machines can use the RE28b?

Janome lists it for the Memory Craft 500E and 550E. The 400E has a 200 × 200 mm field, so it cannot stitch an 11 in length.

Is an 8x11 hoop the same as an 8x12?

No. 8 × 11 in is 200 × 280 mm and 8 × 12 in is 200 × 300 mm, so the 8 × 12 field is 20 mm longer. A design made for 8 × 12 will not fit the RE28b.

Is the Janome MC11000 Macro Hoop the same as the RE28b?

Embird lists both at 200 × 280 mm, but they are different parts, and the Macro Hoop is an overlap hoop for the MC11000. Check the part number against your machine.
