Singer Futura XL-580: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: Futura XL-580, XL-580, XL580, Futura XL580, Singer XL-580

A discontinued Singer sewing and embroidery combo with a 10 × 6 in (254 × 152 mm) embroidery field, 250 built-in designs and 215 sewing stitches. It works with Singer's own FHE design files and bundled PC software. Singer's US site no longer lists it.

The Singer Futura XL-580 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 10 × 6 in (254 × 152 mm) embroidery field. It reads .FHE, .CHE, .XXX, .JEF, .HUS, .PES, .DST, .SHV, .PEC, .EXP, .VIP, .PCS, .PSW, .SEW files and gets designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer, and has 250 built-in designs and 20 lettering fonts.

Futura XL-580 hoop size and embroidery area

The Futura XL-580 can stitch a design up to 10 × 6 in (254 × 152 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5.5 × 8 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 10" × 6" large hoop (10 × 6 in (254 × 152 mm)), 4" × 4" small hoop (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), 6.75" × 4" endless hoop (6.7 × 4 in (170 × 100 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

Who the Futura XL-580 is for

Worth a look if you find one used and want a big 10 × 6 in field plus a full sewing machine in one unit. Skip it if you want a machine with current support, Wi-Fi or an app, or if you do not want to run older PC software.

Strengths

  • Large 10 × 6 in (254 × 152 mm) hoop, far bigger than the 4 × 4 in field on many entry-level combos
  • 250 built-in embroidery designs, including 50 endless border designs, plus 20 lettering fonts
  • 215 built-in sewing stitches, including 7 buttonholes, so it sews as well as embroiders
  • Three hoops listed with it: 10 × 6 in, 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) and a 6.75 × 4 in endless hoop for borders
  • Automatic thread cutter and automatic needle threader

Limits

  • Discontinued: Singer's US site no longer lists it, so you will mostly find it used or as old stock
  • Its own design format is Singer's .FHE; other formats go through the bundled PC software, which the dealer lists for Windows XP to 8
  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • No cap frame is listed for it, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: Singer's own pages for this model could not be opened, so the field, hoops and counts come from a US dealer page that gives hoop sizes in inches only; the millimeter values here are converted. Dealer pages call the largest hoop 10 × 6 in, and say multi-hooping can reach designs up to 12 × 20 in; that second figure is a stitched-in-sections size, not one hooping. Singer UK's file-format FAQ confirms the machine family uses .FHE and .CHE files and that the bundled software converts the other common formats. The dealer sold it in an "I Want It All" bundle with thread, stabilizers, software and a refurbished laptop, so what came with a used unit can vary. The dealer page does not give the screen size, speed or weight, and does not say which older Singer Futura model it followed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Singer Futura XL-580?

The largest hoop is 10 × 6 in (254 × 152 mm). The dealer also lists a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) hoop and a 6.75 × 4 in endless hoop for borders. Designs bigger than 10 × 6 in have to be split across hoopings.

What embroidery file formats does the Singer Futura XL-580 use?

Its own format is .FHE, with .CHE also supported. Singer's bundled PC software converts .XXX, .PSW, .PEC, .PES, .HUS, .SEW, .EXP, .DST and .PCS, and the dealer lists .JEF, .SHV and .VIP as well. Convert other files on a PC, then send them over the USB connection.

What hoops come with the Singer Futura XL-580?

The dealer lists three: a 10 × 6 in large hoop, a 4 × 4 in small hoop and a 6.75 × 4 in endless hoop. We found no cap frame or larger hoop listed for it.

Does the Singer Futura XL-580 sew as well as embroider?

Yes. It is a sewing and embroidery combo with 215 built-in sewing stitches: 10 basic, 6 stretch, 192 decorative and 7 buttonholes. It also has 250 built-in embroidery designs.

Is the Singer Futura XL-580 still sold new?

No. The dealer page marks it discontinued, and Singer's US embroidery machine list shows other models such as the SE9180 instead. Look for it used, and check that the machine, hoops and software all come with it.
