Brother PE780D: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: PE-780D, PE 780D

Disney edition of Brother's older embroidery-only machine, with a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field and 188 built-in designs, 52 of them Disney. It has a monochrome touch screen and reads .pes and .dst files by USB. Brother US lists it as discontinued.

The Brother PE780D is a discontinued embroidery-only machine with a 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or Memory card, and has 188 built-in designs and 6 lettering fonts.

PE780D hoop size and embroidery area

The PE780D can stitch a design up to 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5 × 7 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 5" × 7" hoop (large) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Multi-position hoop (12" × 5" frame, stitches 5" × 7" per position) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)), 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the PE780D use?

The PE780D reads .PES and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick or Memory card. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the PE780D is for

A fit for someone buying used who wants Disney designs built in and a 5 × 7 in field, and does not mind a black-and-white screen. Skip it if you want a color screen, wireless transfer, or .phc file support.

Strengths

  • 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field, with the matching 5 × 7 in hoop in the box
  • 188 built-in designs, including 52 Disney designs, on Brother's US page
  • Up to 650 stitches per minute (Brother Australia spec page)
  • USB port, plus support for Brother embroidery memory cards that fit the 5 × 7 in area
  • Automatic thread cutter and quick-set bobbin

Limits

  • Monochrome (black-and-white) touch screen, so you cannot preview designs in color
  • Reads only .pes and .dst files, not .phc
  • No wireless transfer and no app
  • Brother US lists it as discontinued

Good to know: Design counts differ by region: Brother US lists 188 built-in patterns including 52 Disney designs, while Brother Canada and Brother Australia list 136 patterns (Canada adds 35 Disney designs), so the US figure is used here. Fonts (6) and top speed (650 spm) come from Brother Australia's page for the same model (sold there as Innov-is NV-780D), not the US page. Brother US gives no weight, screen size, release year or hoop list on the product page. Hoops and accessories come from Brother's operation manual, which Brother's support page lists for the PE780D and which is shared with the PE770 (large 5 × 7 in hoop included; 4 × 4 in, small and 12 × 5 in multi-position hoops optional; parts SA442 to SA445). The USB manual covers the PE770 and PE780D together and says only .pes and .dst files can be used. The manual lists no cap frame. The PE770 is the same 5 × 7 in embroidery-only machine without the Disney designs, judging by the shared manuals; Brother does not state this. Brother does not name a successor in the sources checked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Brother PE780D hoop size?

The 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) hoop in the box is the largest size and sets the field. Brother's manual also lists optional 4 × 4 in, small and 12 × 5 in multi-position hoops, but each design is still limited to 5 × 7 in.

Is the Brother PE780D a Disney embroidery machine?

It is the Disney edition of the PE-series machine. Brother US lists 188 built-in designs, 52 of them Disney. Brother Canada lists a smaller set (136 designs plus 35 Disney designs), so counts vary by region.

What file formats does the Brother PE780D read?

Brother's USB manual for the PE770 and PE780D says only .pes and .dst files can be used. DST files show as file names only, without a picture.

Can the Brother PE780D embroider hats?

Brother's manual lists no cap frame for it. The hoops are flat frames, so it is not set up for finished caps.

Is the Brother PE780D still sold?

Brother US and Brother Canada both mark it as discontinued. Brother does not name a replacement on those pages, so look for used or leftover stock.
