Brother PR650: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: Entrepreneur PR650, Brother Entrepreneur PR650, PR-650, PR 650

Discontinued six-needle Brother with an 11-3/4 × 7-7/8 in (300 × 200 mm) field, four hoops in the box and up to 1,000 stitches per minute. It reads PES, PHC and DST by USB. The cap frame is an optional extra, and there is no Wi-Fi.

The Brother PR650 is a discontinued 6-needle embroidery machine with a 12 × 8 in (300 × 200 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer and 25 lettering fonts.

PR650 hoop size and embroidery area

The PR650 can stitch a design up to 12 × 8 in (300 × 200 mm) in one hooping, which is the 8 × 12 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: Extra-large hoop (PRH300, 11-3/4 × 7-7/8 in) (12 × 8 in (300 × 200 mm)), Large hoop (PRH180, 7-1/8 × 5-1/8 in) (7 × 5 in (180 × 130 mm)), Medium hoop (PRH100, 4 × 4 in) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small hoop (PRH60, 2-3/8 × 1-1/2 in) (2.4 × 1.6 in (60 × 40 mm)).

Cap frame: Cap frame and driver set (PRCF3) (5 × 2.4 in (130 × 60 mm)), sold separately.

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, full front, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the PR650 use?

The PR650 reads .PES, .PHC and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick or USB cable to a computer. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the PR650 is for

A used-machine buyer who wants a six-needle Brother with a large field for small runs and is happy to move designs by USB drive or cable. Skip it if you want Wi-Fi, a warranty from a new sale or a machine Brother still sells.

Strengths

  • Six needles hold six thread colors at once, and the machine threads each needle automatically
  • 11-3/4 × 7-7/8 in (300 × 200 mm) field, with 300 × 200, 180 × 130, 100 × 100 and 60 × 40 mm hoops in the box
  • Up to 1,000 stitches per minute on flat work, set in steps of 100 from 400
  • Optional PRCF3 cap frame lets it embroider finished caps in a 130 × 60 mm (about 5 × 2.4 in) area
  • Reads .pes, .phc and .dst files from USB media, or from a computer over the included USB cable

Limits

  • Brother's US page lists it as discontinued, so any machine you find is used or leftover stock
  • No Wi-Fi: designs come in by USB media or USB cable, and the embroidery card reader is an optional extra
  • Reads only .pes, .phc and .dst, with no .jef, .exp or .vp3 support
  • Heavy at about 81 lb (37 kg), and the cap frame is not in the box

Good to know: Specs come from Brother's PR-650 operation manual (version 03, dated 25 Oct 2010 on Brother's support site), its accessory list and its specification table. The manual lists hoops as height × width; this file lists width first. The manual gives the cap area as 60 mm high × 130 mm wide for the optional cap frame; Brother US's PRCF3 page names the PR650 as compatible and carries the note 'Compatible with Version 2.10 Only', so check your machine's software version before buying one. The manual's accessory list names PRCF3 as the 'Advanced cap frame 2 set' and also lists an older advanced cap frame (PRCFH2). Brother's PR650 page also lists optional cylinder-frame and flat-frame accessories; they are not counted as hoops here. The manual says the machine ships set to 1,000 spm for flat work, and cap and cylinder frames run 400 to 600 spm. The manual states 25 built-in character fonts, plus floral, Renaissance, appliqué and Greek alphabets. It gives no count of built-in embroidery designs, so that is left blank. Brother does not publish the screen size in the manual's spec table, so it is left blank; the screen is a color touch panel. Brother's support site groups the PR-650 with the PR-650C. The PR650e has its own Brother US product page and both machines are listed for the same cap frame, but no Brother page I opened states the lineage between the PR650, PR650e and PR655, so no replaces or replacedBy link is set. The US launch year is not stated, so it is left blank (the manual is dated 2010). It is not sold new, so there is no price range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery area of the Brother PR650?

11-3/4 × 7-7/8 in (300 × 200 mm), the largest area it stitches in one hooping. Four hoops come in the box: 300 × 200, 180 × 130, 100 × 100 and 60 × 40 mm.

Does the Brother PR650 have a hat hoop?

Not in the box. Brother lists the optional PRCF3 cap frame and driver set for the PR650, with a cap area of 130 × 60 mm (about 5 × 2.4 in). Brother's PRCF3 page says it is compatible with software version 2.10 only, so check your machine first.

What is the difference between the Brother PR650 and PR650e?

Brother has no comparison page that says. Brother US gives each its own product page, and its PRCF3 cap frame page lists both. Check a listing's model label and specs against Brother's manual before you buy.

What file formats does the Brother PR650 read?

Brother's manual says only .pes, .phc and .dst files can be used. Load them from USB media or send them from a computer over the included USB cable. DST files carry no thread colors, so the machine picks its own color order.

Is the Brother PR650 still sold new?

No. Brother US lists the PR650 as discontinued. Brother still posts the manual and downloads, but machines now come from the used market or old stock.
