Janome Skyline S9: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: Skyline S9, S9, Janome S9

Janome's sewing, quilting and embroidery combo in the Skyline line. It has a 6.7 × 7.9 in (170 × 200 mm) embroidery field, 250 built-in designs, 300 sewing stitches and wireless transfer. The limits: one needle, no cap frame, and a price well above entry-level combos.

The Janome Skyline S9 is a sewing and embroidery machine with a 6.7 × 8 in (170 × 200 mm) embroidery field. It reads .JEF, .JEF+ files and gets designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi or USB cable to a computer, and has 250 built-in designs and 10 lettering fonts.

Skyline S9 hoop size and embroidery area

The Skyline S9 can stitch a design up to 6.7 × 8 in (170 × 200 mm) in one hooping, which is the 5.5 × 8 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: RE20a hoop (6.7 × 8 in (170 × 200 mm)), SQ14a hoop (5.5 × 5.5 in (140 × 140 mm)), FA10a hoop (4 × 1.6 in (100 × 40 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the Skyline S9 use?

The Skyline S9 reads .JEF and .JEF+ files. You load designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi or USB cable to a computer. Designs in other formats (for example .EXP or .PES) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the Skyline S9 is for

A fit for sewists and quilters who want one machine for sewing, quilting and mid-size embroidery up to 6.7 × 7.9 in. Skip it if you mainly embroider and want a lower price, a multi-needle machine, or finished hats.

Strengths

  • Embroidery field of 6.7 × 7.9 in (170 × 200 mm), bigger than the 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field common on home combos
  • Three hoops are listed in the standard package: 170 × 200 mm, 140 × 140 mm and 100 × 40 mm
  • 250 built-in embroidery designs, 40 of them by Anna Maria Horner
  • 300 built-in sewing stitches, 11 one-step buttonholes, a 9 mm maximum stitch width and the AcuFeed Flex layered-fabric feed
  • Designs can be sent wirelessly, from a USB drive or over a direct computer connection

Limits

  • Dealers sell it for several thousand dollars, far above entry-level sewing and embroidery combos
  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • No cap frame appears in its listed hoops, so it is not set up for finished hats
  • The field is smaller than on Janome's large-field MC550E, which stitches up to 360 × 200 mm

Good to know: The embroidery area, hoop names and sizes, design count and stitch count come from dealer listings that reproduce Janome's spec text; check Janome's S9 page before you buy. The file-format list is JEF and JEF+, Janome's own formats; the S9's full format list was not confirmed, so check the manual before buying designs in other formats such as DST. Listings give no embroidery speed, and top sewing speed is quoted as 1,000 stitches per minute (800 in one listing), so no speed is recorded. Janome's screen size and a companion app name are also not listed on the pages checked. Hoop width and height follow the order Janome lists (170 × 200 mm), so confirm how the RE20a hoop sits on the arm in the manual. One dealer page gives the weight as 26 lb. Dealers also sell factory-recertified S9 units at a lower price. The hoops listed here are those in the standard new-machine package.
