Brother Stellaire XJ1: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: Stellaire XJ1, Stellaire Innov-is XJ1, Innov-is XJ1, Innov-ís XJ1

Brother's first-generation Stellaire sewing and embroidery combo (2019). It has a 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) embroidery field, 727 built-in designs, 727 sewing stitches, a 10.1 in touchscreen and wifi. Brother's lineup page now shows the XJ2 instead. No cap frame.

The Brother Stellaire XJ1 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .PHX, .DST, .PEN files and gets designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and has 727 built-in designs and 24 lettering fonts.

XJ1 hoop size and embroidery area

The XJ1 can stitch a design up to 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) in one hooping, which is the 9.5 × 14 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 9.5" × 14" hoop (extra large) (9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm)), 9.5" × 9.5" hoop (9.5 × 9.5 in (240 × 240 mm)), 5" × 7" hoop (large) (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)), 4" × 4" hoop (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Brother: 7" × 12" magnetic frame (7 × 12 in (180 × 300 mm)), 8" × 12" hoop (8 × 12 in (200 × 300 mm)), 8" × 8" hoop (8 × 8 in (200 × 200 mm)), 6" × 6" hoop (5.9 × 5.9 in (150 × 150 mm)), 5" × 7" magnetic frame (5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm)), Border frame (about 4" × 12") (4 × 12 in (100 × 300 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, full front, full back, pocket, sleeve, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, tote bag, pillow cover, quilt block, patch.

What file format does the XJ1 use?

The XJ1 reads .PES, .PHC, .PHX, .DST and .PEN files. You load designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and the Artspira app works with it. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the XJ1 is for

A fit for serious sewers and embroiderers who want one machine for large-field embroidery, quilting and everyday sewing. Skip it if you want a multi-needle machine for production, or if you need a new machine with a dealer warranty, since the XJ1 is hard to find new.

Strengths

  • 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) field, with four hoops in the box: 9.5 × 14, 9.5 × 9.5, 5 × 7 and 4 × 4 in
  • Sews and embroiders: 727 built-in sewing stitches and 727 built-in embroidery designs (101 of them Disney/Pixar)
  • 10.1 in color touchscreen, with up to 1,050 stitches per minute for embroidery and sewing
  • Wifi and two USB ports, the My Design Snap camera app for placing designs, and Artspira app support
  • Large sewing space: about 11.25 in (286 mm) from needle to arm, with a laser guideline and an automatic needle threader

Limits

  • Single needle, so you change thread color by hand
  • Brother lists no cap frame, so it is not set up for finished hats
  • Brother Canada and Brother Australia mark it discontinued, and it is not listed new at the large US dealers we checked; Brother's US page shows no price, so you may have to hunt for stock or buy used
  • Brother's newer XJ2 lists more built-in content (889 embroidery designs and 760 sewing stitches, against 727 and 727 here)

Good to know: Brother's US page, brochure and update addendum give the largest embroidery area as 9.5 × 14 in. Brother Australia's XJ1 page gives the embroidery area as 240 × 360 mm (width × height), and Brother's manuals name the big frame by its height and width as 36 cm × 24 cm, which matches the 240 × 360 mm field used here and on the XE1 and XE2 files. Brother's US page and brochure put four hoops in the box (9.5 × 14, 9.5 × 9.5, 5 × 7 and 4 × 4 in) and list no cap frame. The 7 × 12 in magnetic frame is optional: Brother's update addendum gives it as 300 mm tall × 180 mm wide, and it also comes in Brother's Premium Pack I upgrade kit for XJ1 and XE1 owners. Brother's accessory catalog for the XJ1 also lists the optional 8 × 12, 8 × 8 and 6 × 6 in hoops, a 4 × 12 in border frame, a small 1 × 2.5 in frame and a 5 × 7 in magnetic frame. Their sizes here come from Brother's XE1 manual, which lists the same part codes, and from the catalog for the 5 × 7 in magnetic frame (180 × 130 mm). Brother Canada and Brother Australia both mark the XJ1 as discontinued. Brother's US page still shows the XJ1 with no price and a Locate a Dealer button, but Brother's Stellaire lineup page now shows only the XE2 and XJ2, and one large dealer tags the XJ1 as discontinued and out of stock, so price is left blank. The XJ1 is the sewing sibling of the XE1, which only embroiders. The file types (PES, PHC, PHX, DST, PEN) come from Brother's XE1 manual (code 882-W80/W82), which shares one update addendum with the XJ1; the XJ1's own manual (882-W70) was too large to open. Brother's brochure and spec table say up to 1,050 stitches per minute for embroidery, while a line of Brother's US page text says 1,500, so the lower figure is used. Brother's US page lists the weight as 37.48 with no unit; that works out to pounds. Brother's brochure opens with over 725 built-in designs, while its spec table and Brother's US page say 727.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Brother Stellaire XJ1?

The largest area is 9.5 × 14 in (240 × 360 mm) in one hooping. That is large enough to combine several 4 × 4 or 5 × 7 in designs without rehooping.

What hoops come with the Brother Stellaire XJ1?

Four hoops come in the box: 9.5 × 14, 9.5 × 9.5, 5 × 7 and 4 × 4 in. Brother lists no cap frame for the XJ1. Optional hoops are sold separately, including 8 × 12, 8 × 8 and 6 × 6 in hoops, a border frame, and 7 × 12 in and 5 × 7 in magnetic frames.

How much does the Brother Stellaire XJ1 cost?

Brother's US page shows no price and sends buyers to a dealer. We found no steady new price. Brother Canada and Brother Australia mark the XJ1 as discontinued, and one large US dealer lists it as discontinued and out of stock. Ask an authorized Brother dealer about stock.

What is the difference between the Brother Stellaire XJ1 and XJ2?

Both sew and embroider in a 9.5 × 14 in field, with four hoops in the box. Brother's US pages list 727 built-in designs, 24 fonts and 727 stitches for the XJ1, and 889 designs, 26 fonts and 760 stitches for the XJ2. Brother's Stellaire lineup page now shows the XJ2, not the XJ1.

What file formats does the Brother Stellaire XJ1 read?

Brother's XE1 manual, which shares an update addendum with the XJ1, lists .pes, .phc, .phx, .dst and .pen files. Load them from a USB flash drive, or send them over wifi from a computer with Brother's PE-DESIGN 11 software.
