Sewing and embroidery combo machines

A combo machine sews like a normal sewing machine and, with the embroidery unit attached, embroiders designs from a hoop. It saves space and money if you want both, but you cannot sew while it embroiders, and the embroidery field is the same as on the matching embroidery-only model.

How to choose

Embroidery fieldMost combos are 4 × 4 or 5 × 7 in; higher-end models go to 6 × 10 in and beyond.
Sewing stitches and featuresNumber of built-in stitches, buttonhole styles, needle threader and presser feet.
One machine, two jobsIf you often embroider while sewing another project, two machines may suit you better.

Frequently asked questions

Is a combo sewing and embroidery machine worth it?

If you want to do both and have limited space, yes. If embroidery is your main interest, an embroidery-only model often gives the same field for less money.

Can a regular sewing machine do embroidery?

Only free-motion or decorative-stitch embroidery. Machine embroidery from design files needs an embroidery unit that moves the hoop.

Can I sew and embroider at the same time on a combo machine?

No. It is one machine: you attach the embroidery unit to embroider and remove it to sew.
