Hoop size guide

6 × 6 in embroidery hoop (150 × 150 mm)

A square hoop with a 150 × 150 mm (5.9 × 5.9 in) stitch area. Baby Lock sells it as a 6 × 6 in hoop with a grid (BLMA-150), and Embird lists Brother, Pfaff and Viking square hoops at the same size. It suits quilt blocks and other square designs.

A 6 × 6 in hoop gives about 34.9 square inches of stitch area: 5.9 × 5.9 in (150 × 150 mm). 52 machines in our guide can stitch this size in one hooping.

What fits in a 6 × 6 in hoop

  • Quilt blocks and appliqué squares up to about 5.5 in (140 mm)
  • Square monograms, crests and patches up to about 5.5 in (140 mm)
  • Left-chest and pocket logos too wide for a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) hoop
  • Pillow-corner, napkin and coaster designs
  • Baby bib and onesie motifs up to about 5.5 in (140 mm) square

Needs a bigger hoop

  • 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) designs, whose 180 mm side is 30 mm longer than this hoop
  • 8 in (200 mm) quilt blocks, which need an 8 × 8 in hoop
  • Designs larger than about 5.9 in (150 mm) in either direction
  • Jacket-back and full-front designs

Good to know: Baby Lock lists its 6 × 6 in hoop and grid (BLMA-150) as 150mm x 150mm and names 23 Baby Lock models for it, including the Flare, Altair 2, Meridian 2, Solaris 2 and Radiance. Its Flare page shows the hoop as an optional extra next to the 4 × 4 in and 5 × 7 in hoops. Embird lists a Brother Square Hoop, Pfaff's All Fabric Hoop II and Viking's Quilters Hoop at 150 × 150 mm (5.9 × 5.9 in). Six inches is 152.4 mm, so the 6 × 6 in name is slightly bigger than the real field. Use 150 × 150 mm and keep designs a little inside it. A square field gives no rotation advantage. Janome's nearest square hoop is the SQ14b at 140 × 140 mm, and the next size up is the 200 × 200 mm 8 × 8 in hoop.

Standard placements that fit at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, cap front, cap side and back, beanie, towel, baby onesie, baby bib, quilt block, patch. See the design size chart.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a 6x6 embroidery hoop in mm?

It is 150 × 150 mm, or about 5.9 × 5.9 in. Baby Lock gives its 6 × 6 in hoop as 150mm x 150mm, and Embird lists Brother, Pfaff and Viking square hoops at the same size.

Which machines can use a 6x6 hoop?

Baby Lock lists its 6 × 6 in hoop and grid for models such as the Flare, Altair 2, Meridian 2 and Solaris 2. Brother, Pfaff and Viking list square hoops at 150 × 150 mm for their own models. The machine needs a field of at least 150 × 150 mm.

Is a 6x6 hoop good for quilt blocks?

Baby Lock positions it for quilt blocks and other projects that suit a symmetrical hoop. A block has to be smaller than about 5.5 in (140 mm) to stitch inside it, so larger blocks need an 8 × 8 in hoop.

Can I use a 6x6 hoop on a 5x7 machine?

No. A 5 × 7 in machine has a 130 mm short side, narrower than the 150 mm hoop, so it cannot stitch this field. Machines with a 6 × 10 in (160 × 260 mm) field, like the Baby Lock Flare, can.
