.PHC embroidery files (Brother embroidery data file)

PHC is a Brother embroidery file that many Brother and Baby Lock machines accept alongside PES and DST. It carries a PEC block with the stitches and thread colors. Embrilliance Essentials and Ink/Stitch can open it but not save it, so PES stays the everyday choice.

About .PHC files

PHC is a second Brother embroidery format. Brother's help pages list .phc next to .pes and .dst for many of its machines, and Baby Lock's Meridian 2 page lists it too, along with .pec. Not every model reads it: a few machines in our guide list only PES and DST.

EduTechWiki describes a PHC file as a header with general information followed by a PEC block. The PEC block is the same machine-readable part that sits inside a PES file, and it holds the stitches, the color changes and the small pictures shown on the screen. That is why PHC keeps colors. EduTechWiki groups PHC with PES, PHB, EMB and ART as hybrid formats, which can hold both machine stitches and higher-level design data. What one PHC file holds still depends on the software that saved it.

Support outside Brother's own software is thin. Embrilliance Essentials and Ink/Stitch can both read PHC, but neither can write it. In practice you open a PHC and save the result as PES or another format. Brother also warns that data not made by its own design systems can make a machine misbehave, so a clean export is safer than a renamed file.

If your machine accepts both PES and PHC, use PES. More programs can write it, and Brother's pages list it for every model we checked.

How to convert .PHC files

  • Use PES for everyday work. Embrilliance Essentials and Ink/Stitch can write PES but not PHC.
  • To use a PHC on a machine that does not list it, open it in Embrilliance Essentials or Ink/Stitch and save it as PES. Check the colors afterward.
  • Save files in the root of the USB stick, with a name of letters, numbers, dashes and underscores only. Brother's pages say files inside folders cannot be retrieved and special characters may stop a name from showing.
  • Check your own model's page before you buy a PHC pack. A few Brother machines list only PES and DST.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PHC file?

It is a Brother embroidery file. It starts with a header and holds a PEC block with the stitches, colors and pictures the machine needs. Brother and Baby Lock machines read it, usually together with PES and DST.

Which machines read PHC files?

Brother lists .phc for many of its machines, and Baby Lock's Meridian 2 page lists it too. Not every model does, and a few in our guide read only PES and DST, so check your manual.

Can I open a PHC file on my computer?

Embrilliance Essentials and Ink/Stitch can open it, but neither can save PHC. Open it and save a copy as PES for use on a machine.

Does PHC keep thread colors?

Yes. The PEC block inside it stores the colors, unlike DST, which has none. Check the preview on the machine screen before you stitch.
