Brother SE600: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: SE-600, SE 600

A 4 × 4 in sewing and embroidery combo that Brother has discontinued. It has a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) field, 80 built-in designs, 103 sewing stitches and a color touch screen, but no Wi-Fi: designs come in by USB flash drive.

The Brother SE600 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 80 built-in designs and 9 lettering fonts.

SE600 hoop size and embroidery area

The SE600 can stitch a design up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Large frame (about 4" × 6.7", two attach positions; each design still 4" × 4") (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), 4" × 4" magnetic hoop (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

What file format does the SE600 use?

The SE600 reads .PES, .PHC and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the SE600 is for

Someone shopping used or leftover stock who wants a simple combo machine for small embroidery. Anyone who wants Wi-Fi, an app or a machine Brother still sells new should look at the SE700.

Strengths

  • Sews and embroiders: 103 built-in sewing stitches and 80 built-in embroidery designs
  • Color touch screen to preview and edit designs
  • Reads .pes, .phc and .dst files from a USB flash drive
  • A 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) hoop and an embroidery foot come in the box

Limits

  • Brother has discontinued it and its US page shows it out of stock
  • No Wi-Fi, so designs move by USB flash drive only
  • The embroidery field is only 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm), and no design can be larger
  • Brother lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: The optional large frame can be attached in two positions to cover about 4 × 6.7 in without re-hooping, but Brother's manual still limits each design to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm). Brother lists the screen as 3.2 × 1.8 in (width × height), which works out to about 3.7 in across; Brother Canada gives 3.7 in. The 400 stitches per minute embroidery speed comes from Brother's product page data, not from the manual. Weight is empty because Brother's pages only give the carton weight. That the SE700 replaced it comes from retailer listings, not from Brother.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Brother SE600?

The largest design is 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm), and a 4 × 4 in hoop comes in the box.

Can the Brother SE600 use a bigger hoop?

Not for bigger designs. Brother lists a large frame that attaches in two positions to cover about 4 × 6.7 in without re-hooping, but each design is still limited to 4 × 4 in.

What file formats does the Brother SE600 read?

Its manual says only .pes, .phc and .dst files can be used. Load them from a USB flash drive, because the machine has no Wi-Fi.

Can the Brother SE600 embroider hats?

Brother lists no cap frame for the SE600, so it is not set up for finished caps.

Is the Brother SE600 good for beginners?

It suits first projects: a color touch screen, 80 built-in designs and a 4 × 4 in hoop. Brother has discontinued it, and the SE700, which retailers call its replacement, adds Wi-Fi.
