Brother LB5000: hoop size, file formats and specs

A discontinued Brother sewing and embroidery combo with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) field, 80 built-in designs, 103 sewing stitches and a color touch screen. Designs come in by USB flash drive; there is no Wi-Fi. Designs bigger than 4 × 4 in will not fit.

The Brother LB5000 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 80 built-in designs and 9 lettering fonts.

LB5000 hoop size and embroidery area

The LB5000 can stitch a design up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

What file format does the LB5000 use?

The LB5000 reads .PES, .PHC and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the LB5000 is for

Someone shopping used, refurbished or leftover stock who wants one simple machine for everyday sewing and small embroidery such as names and pocket designs. Anyone who wants Wi-Fi, an app or a machine Brother still sells new should look at the SE700.

  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • Brother lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: Brother's US pages list the LB5000S (Star Wars) and LB5000M (Marvel) editions with the same specs as dealers give for the LB5000. The editions add character faceplates and codes for 20 extra downloadable designs, and Brother marks both as discontinued. Brother's LB5000 manual is product code 888-M20, the same manual file Brother lists for the SE600, and the specs match. The manual limits each design to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm). The optional large frame, about 4 × 6.7 in (10 × 17 cm, width × height), can be attached in two positions to cover that area without re-hooping. Brother US gives the screen as 3.2 × 1.8 in (width × height), which works out to about 3.7 in across. Brother's pages give 710 as the maximum sewing speed and list no embroidery speed, so that field is empty. Brother US lists unit weight as 14.33 with no unit; it is read here as pounds. Brother's US pages name no replacement or predecessor, so none is linked.
