Brother SE630: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: SE-630, SE 630

A 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) sewing and embroidery combo with a 3.7 in color touchscreen, 80 built-in designs, 9 fonts and 103 stitches. It reads PES, PHC and DST from a USB flash drive. No wireless, and new stock is hard to find.

The Brother SE630 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 80 built-in designs and 9 lettering fonts.

SE630 hoop size and embroidery area

The SE630 can stitch a design up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Large frame (about 4" × 6.7", two attach positions; each design still 4" × 4") (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

What file format does the SE630 use?

The SE630 reads .PES, .PHC and .DST files. You load designs by USB stick. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the SE630 is for

A fit for beginners who want a small-design embroidery and sewing combo and can find a unit in stock. Skip it if you want designs bigger than 4 × 4 in or wireless transfer.

Strengths

  • 3.7 in color touchscreen with a realistic preview of the design
  • 80 built-in designs and 9 lettering fonts, with 400 more designs offered as downloads
  • Reads PES, PHC and DST from a USB flash drive through the built-in USB port
  • Also sews: 103 built-in stitches, 10 one-step buttonholes and 8 included feet

Limits

  • Single designs are limited to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)
  • Not wireless, and a USB stick is not included
  • Brother's US store shows it out of stock

Good to know: Brother's US store shows the SE630 and its refurbished RSE630 as out of stock. It is not marked discontinued there, but at least one dealer lists it as discontinued; we list it as discontinued because it cannot be ordered new. It shares one operation manual (product code 888-M20) with the SE625. Brother's headline says 480 designs: 80 built in plus 400 downloadable. The manual says the embroidery area is 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm). It lists an optional large frame (4 × 6.7 in, 100 × 170 mm) that lets you place several designs without re-hooping and an optional small frame (1 × 2-1/2 in, 20 × 60 mm) for lettering. Each design still has to fit within 4 × 4 in, so the field stays 100 × 100 mm. Brother's font chart for this machine family shows nine fonts, three of them Japanese-character fonts. Brother US does not publish an embroidery speed or weight. The Brother page lists the screen as 3.2 × 1.8 in (width × height), about 3.7 in on the diagonal.
