Brother SE700: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: SE-700, SE 700

Brother's current entry-level sewing and embroidery combo. It has a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field, 135 built-in designs, 103 sewing stitches, Wi-Fi and USB. The small field is the main limit: designs bigger than 4 × 4 in will not fit.

The Brother SE700 is a sewing and embroidery machine with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES, .PHC, .DST, .PEN files and gets designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and has 135 built-in designs and 10 lettering fonts.

SE700 hoop size and embroidery area

The SE700 can stitch a design up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Brother: 4" × 4" magnetic hoop (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

What file format does the SE700 use?

The SE700 reads .PES, .PHC, .DST and .PEN files. You load designs by USB stick or Wi-Fi, and the Artspira app works with it. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the SE700 is for

A good fit for beginners who want one machine for everyday sewing and small embroidery such as names, patches and pocket designs. Skip it if you want designs bigger than 4 × 4 in or plan to embroider in volume.

Strengths

  • Sews and embroiders: 103 built-in sewing stitches and 135 built-in embroidery designs
  • Reads .pes, .phc, .dst and .pen design files from a USB flash drive or over Wi-Fi
  • Wi-Fi sends designs from a PC with Brother's free Design Database Transfer software, and the Artspira app works with it
  • A 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) hoop and eight presser feet come in the box
  • Weighs about 15 lb (6.8 kg), or about 18 lb (8.3 kg) with the embroidery unit attached

Limits

  • The embroidery field is only 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm), and Brother lists no larger hoop for it
  • Embroidery speed tops out at 400 stitches per minute, against 650 on the SE2000
  • Single needle, so you change the thread by hand for every color
  • Brother lists no cap frame for it, so it is not set up for finished hats

Good to know: Brother's manual lists the largest design as 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm). Brother's pages also quote a 6.4 × 4.0 in work area; that is the sewing space to the right of the needle, not the embroidery field. The same Brother manual covers the SE700, SE725 and LB5500. Brother US gives the screen as 3.2 × 1.8 in (width × height), which works out to about 3.7 in across. The manual also lists a small optional frame (about 1 × 2.5 in) with three small stitch areas. That the SE700 replaces the SE600 comes from retailer listings, not from Brother.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Brother SE700?

The largest design is 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm). One 4 × 4 in hoop comes in the box. Brother's manual lists only a small optional frame besides it, and Brother lists a 4 × 4 in magnetic hoop as compatible.

What embroidery file formats does the Brother SE700 read?

Its manual lists .pes, .phc, .dst and .pen files. Load them from a USB flash drive, or send them over Wi-Fi with Brother's free Design Database Transfer software.

What is the difference between the Brother SE700 and SE725?

Brother's specs match: a 4 × 4 in field, 135 built-in designs, 103 stitches and Wi-Fi, and both are covered by one manual. The SE725 is the Walmart exclusive, and Brother's page for it adds 50 free downloadable designs.

Can the Brother SE700 embroider hats?

Brother lists no cap frame for the SE700, so it is not set up for finished caps. Its 4 × 4 in hoop is made for flat fabric.

How does the Brother SE700 compare with the SE2000?

The SE2000 has a larger 5 × 7 in (130 × 180 mm) field, embroiders at 650 stitches per minute against 400, and has 193 built-in designs and 241 stitches against 135 and 103. Both have Wi-Fi.
