Brother SE350: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: SE-350, SE 350, Brother Enthusiast SE350

An older sewing and embroidery combo with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) field, 70 built-in designs, 5 character types and 67 sewing stitches. Extra designs come only from Brother embroidery cards. It has no USB port, so you cannot load your own files. Discontinued.

The Brother SE350 is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .PES files and gets designs by Memory card, and has 70 built-in designs and 5 lettering fonts.

SE350 hoop size and embroidery area

The SE350 can stitch a design up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 4" × 4" hoop (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Large frame (about 4" × 6.7"; each design still 4" × 4") (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 2.5" × 1") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, baby onesie, baby bib, patch.

What file format does the SE350 use?

The SE350 reads .PES files. You load designs by Memory card. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the SE350 is for

A fit for someone who finds one used and wants simple 4 × 4 in embroidery plus everyday sewing, using built-in designs and Brother cards. Skip it if you want to load your own designs from a computer or USB stick, or stitch anything bigger than 4 × 4 in.

Strengths

  • 70 built-in designs, 5 character types and 120 frame patterns (10 shapes with 12 stitch types)
  • Also sews: 67 built-in utility and decorative stitches and 10 one-step buttonholes
  • Built-in card slot for optional Brother embroidery cards, plus memory to save about 12 designs
  • On-screen editing and rotation, a backlit touch-screen LCD and an automatic thread cutter
  • A 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery frame comes in the box

Limits

  • The field is only 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm); the optional large frame holds several designs but each still has to fit 4 × 4 in
  • Brother's manual describes no USB port or computer link, so designs from a computer cannot be loaded; you are limited to built-in designs and Brother cards
  • Single needle, so you change thread by hand for every color, and Brother lists no cap frame
  • Brother US lists it as discontinued, so you will mostly find used or refurbished units

Good to know: Brother's US product page for the SE350 is marked discontinued and shows no spec values, so the data comes from Brother's 2008 sell sheet and its operation manual (product code 885-V31/V32/V33, version 04, March 2010). Both say designs up to 4 × 4 in and a built-in embroidery card slot. The manual describes no USB port or computer connection and does not name any file format; designs come from the machine, Brother cards or its own memory. The format is listed as pes because Brother embroidery cards hold Brother-format (.pes) designs, and designs from Brother PE-Design software can be written to a blank Brother card with a card writer; there is no way to load a file straight from a computer or USB stick. The same manual lists the optional small frame (about 2 cm × 6 cm, 1 × 2.5 in) and the optional large frame (up to 17 cm tall × 10 cm wide, about 6.7 × 4 in), which is for placing several patterns without re-hooping. The large frame is listed at 100 × 100 mm as for similar Brother models, since each design still has to fit 4 × 4 in. The sell sheet says Disney embroidery cards do not work with this machine. Embroidery speed, screen size and screen color are not given in the Brother pages we could open, so they are left empty or marked monochrome by assumption from similar models (not confirmed). Weight of 13.7 lb comes from a dealer listing seen only in a search result snippet, so treat it as approximate. Brother names no successor or release year; the sell sheet is dated 2008. The UK name is Innov-is 350SE; we do not use it as an alias because we did not confirm it on a US page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Brother SE350 embroidery size?

The SE350 embroiders designs up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm). One 4 × 4 in frame comes in the box.

Does the Brother SE350 use embroidery cards?

Yes. It has a built-in card slot on the right side for optional Brother embroidery cards. Brother says Disney cards are not compatible, so check a card is listed for this machine.

How do I get designs into the Brother SE350?

Brother's manual lists three sources: the 70 built-in designs, optional embroidery cards and designs you saved in the machine's own memory. It describes no USB port or computer connection, so you cannot load your own files.

Can the Brother SE350 use a bigger hoop?

Not for a bigger single design. Brother's manual lists an optional large frame (about 4 × 6.7 in) for placing several designs without re-hooping, but each design must still fit 4 × 4 in.

Is the Brother SE350 the same as the Brother SE400?

No. Both are older 4 × 4 in sewing and embroidery combos with 70 designs and 67 stitches, but Brother's SE400 documents a USB connection for PES and DST files, while the SE350 manual describes only the card slot.
