Singer SE9180: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: SE-9180, SE 9180, 9180, Singer 9180

Singer's current US sewing-and-embroidery machine: 250 sewing stitches, 150 embroidery designs, 10 fonts and a 7 in color touchscreen. The included hoop covers 6.7 × 3.9 in (170 × 100 mm). It reads VP3 files by USB. The field is small.

The Singer SE9180 is a sewing and embroidery machine with a 6.7 × 4 in (170 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .VP3 files and gets designs by USB stick, and has 150 built-in designs and 10 lettering fonts.

SE9180 hoop size and embroidery area

The SE9180 can stitch a design up to 6.7 × 4 in (170 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 170 × 100 mm hoop (6.7 × 4 in (170 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Singer: 100 × 100 mm hoop (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), 40 × 40 mm hoop (1.6 × 1.6 in (40 × 40 mm)).

What file format does the SE9180 use?

The SE9180 reads .VP3 files. You load designs by USB stick, and the CREATIVATE app works with it. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the SE9180 is for

Suits a sewer who wants one affordable machine for everyday sewing plus small to medium embroidery such as monograms and patches. Not for anyone who needs a large hoop, hats, or files in PES or DST without converting.

Strengths

  • One machine for both jobs: 250 built-in sewing stitches and 150 embroidery designs
  • 7 in color touchscreen and an automatic needle threader
  • Light for a combo machine at 15.5 lb
  • Supports endless-border embroidery for quilt and home décor borders
  • Optional 100 × 100 mm and 40 × 40 mm hoops from Singer for smaller designs

Limits

  • Largest hoop is 6.7 × 3.9 in (170 × 100 mm); Singer lists no bigger one
  • Embroidery speed tops out at 450 stitches per minute, against 800 for sewing
  • Singer's guidance for the SE series is VP3 files only, so PES and DST need converting
  • Singer's own pages disagree on Wi-Fi, so plan on USB stick transfer

Good to know: Singer's SE9180 page is inconsistent: the feature list mentions Wi-Fi through CREATIVATE, while its own FAQ says the SE9180 is not Wi-Fi enabled, so only USB is recorded. The same FAQ also gives the embroidery area as 7 × 4.7 in, but the product page and hoop lists give 170 × 100 mm, which is used here. The SE9185 appears on Singer's Mexican and European sites with the same 170 × 100 mm area and Wi-Fi; Singer's US site sells the SE9180. Singer's Legacy SE300 (10¼ × 6 in large hoop) is shown as sold out on singer.com, and the SE340 is discontinued, so neither is listed as a current choice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery area of the Singer SE9180?

Singer lists up to 6.7 × 3.9 in (170 × 100 mm) with the included hoop. Optional 100 × 100 mm and 40 × 40 mm hoops are sold by Singer for smaller designs.

What file format does the Singer SE9180 use?

Singer says to import your own designs in VP3 format using a USB stick. Older Singer machines used XXX, so XXX or PES files may need converting.

Does the Singer SE9180 have Wi-Fi?

Singer's FAQ says it is not Wi-Fi enabled and that you transfer designs by USB stick. Its feature list mentions CREATIVATE Wi-Fi, so confirm with Singer if wireless transfer matters to you.

What is the difference between the Singer SE9180 and SE9185?

Both list a 170 × 100 mm field and 150 designs. Singer's Mexican and European pages show the SE9185 with Wi-Fi, while Singer's US site sells the SE9180.

Is the Singer SE9180 a good choice for hats?

Singer lists no cap frame or hat hoop for the SE9180, so it is not set up for finished caps.
