Brother SE270D: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: SE-270D, SE 270D

A discontinued Brother sewing and embroidery combo with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) field, 97 built-in designs (27 of them Disney characters) and 67 built-in sewing stitches. Designs come only from the machine or Brother embroidery cards: no USB, no Wi-Fi.

The Brother SE270D is a discontinued sewing and embroidery machine with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .CARD files and gets designs by Memory card, and has 97 built-in designs and 5 lettering fonts.

SE270D hoop size and embroidery area

The SE270D can stitch a design up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: 4" × 4" frame (medium) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Large frame (about 4" × 6.7"; holds several designs) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (about 1" × 2.5") (2.4 × 0.8 in (60 × 20 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, baby onesie, baby bib, patch.

What file format does the SE270D use?

The SE270D reads .CARD files. You load designs by Memory card. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the SE270D is for

A fit for a Disney fan who wants a simple 4 × 4 in sewing and embroidery combo and is happy to buy used. Skip it if you want to load your own designs from a computer or USB stick, or need anything bigger than 4 × 4 in.

Strengths

  • 97 built-in designs, 27 of them Disney characters, plus 5 lettering styles and 120 frame patterns (10 shapes × 12 stitch types)
  • Also sews: the manual lists 67 built-in stitches, including one-step auto-size buttonholes
  • Quick-load thread cassette threads the needle for you, and two cassettes come in the box so the next color can be set up while one sews
  • A 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) frame, embroidery foot, touch pen and embroidery bobbin thread are in the accessory list

Limits

  • The embroidery field is only 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm); the optional large frame is described for stitching several designs without re-hooping, and the manual gives no larger single-design size
  • No USB port or Wi-Fi in Brother's manual: designs come from the built-in set or Brother embroidery cards only
  • The built-in Disney designs cannot be resized or flipped
  • Brother's US page marks it Discontinued, so expect used machines

Good to know: Brother's US page for the SE270D is marked Discontinued and gives only the design count, a stitch-function count, thread cassette and buttonhole features. The rest comes from Brother's operation manual, its Disney design guide and its quick reference guide. The manual describes 70 built-in patterns. The Disney design guide numbers 25 patterns, two of them offered in both large and small sizes, which makes 27 Disney selections and fits the 97 designs on Brother's page. Brother's page says 98 stitch functions, but the operation manual says the machine has 67 utility stitches, so we show 67. Brother's manual gives no embroidery speed, weight or screen size, so those are left empty. The manual's screen pictures are black and white, but it does not state the screen type. The manual names no design file types. It shows a card slot, no USB or computer port, and mentions computer-made designs only as PE-DESIGN Ver. 5.0 data saved on a blank card, so file formats are listed as card: the machine reads only Brother embroidery cards, not files you can copy onto it. The manual lists the large frame as 6.7 in (17 cm) tall and 4 in (10 cm) wide, for stitching several patterns without moving the fabric. It gives the largest single pattern only for the included frame (4 × 4 in), and no built-in design in Brother's guides is bigger than about 10 cm in either direction, so the field stays 4 × 4 in here. The manual also lists a small frame (1 × 2.5 in) for letters and small designs. Brother's page does not show whether either extra frame is still sold, so check with a dealer. Brother's manual lists no cap frame; third-party sellers advertise cap hoops and hat inserts for it, which we have not verified. Brother's page names no successor and no release year, and we found no new units at the dealers we checked.
