Brother PE150: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: PE-150, PE 150, PE150V, PE-150V

An older Brother embroidery-only machine with about a 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) field, 60 built-in designs, 3 lettering fonts and a slot for Brother embroidery cards. It has no USB or computer link, so you cannot load your own files. Brother Canada lists it as discontinued.

The Brother PE150 is a discontinued embroidery-only machine with a 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) embroidery field. It reads .CARD files and gets designs by Memory card, and has 60 built-in designs and 3 lettering fonts.

PE150 hoop size and embroidery area

The PE150 can stitch a design up to 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: Regular frame (about 4.3 × 4.3 in) (4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Large frame (repositionable, 110 × 110 mm per position, 110 × 182 mm in three positions) (4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm)), Small frame (70 × 70 mm) (2.8 × 2.8 in (70 × 70 mm)), Extra-small frame (30 × 50 mm, can also be fitted sideways) (1.2 × 2 in (30 × 50 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, baby onesie, baby bib, patch.

What file format does the PE150 use?

The PE150 reads .CARD files. You load designs by Memory card. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the PE150 is for

A fit for someone who finds a used unit, or already owns Brother cards, and wants simple small embroidery such as names, pockets and cuffs. Skip it if you want to load your own designs from a computer or stitch anything bigger than about 4.3 × 4.3 in.

Strengths

  • 60 built-in designs, 3 lettering fonts and 10 frame shapes with 12 stitch types
  • A card slot takes Brother embroidery cards; the manual's US options list shows 19 of them
  • Four frame sizes: a regular frame in the box, plus optional large, small (70 × 70 mm) and extra-small (30 × 50 mm) frames
  • Touch-panel LCD with a layout screen and a trial function that traces the stitch area before you sew
  • Saves up to 5 pattern combinations in memory, with up to 35 characters or patterns in one combination

Limits

  • The field is only about 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm), and the optional large frame only lets you chain designs, not stitch a bigger one
  • No USB port, cable or Wi-Fi in the manual: designs come from Brother's own cards, so you cannot load .pes or .dst files
  • Only 3 built-in fonts, and the outline font has capitals and numbers only
  • Single needle and no cap frame, so you change colors by hand and it is not set up for finished hats
  • Discontinued, so new cards and accessories are mostly found second-hand

Good to know: Brother's US page for the PE150V (the US model name) carries no specs, and Brother Canada's page says the product is discontinued, so the data comes from Brother's English user's guide (posted on Brother's support site and dated 2005) and the Polish translation Brother hosts. The guide never prints the regular frame's stitch area in mm. It gives 70 × 70 mm for the small frame, 50 × 30 mm for the extra-small frame, and 11 × 18.2 cm for the large frame across three clamp positions. The 110 × 110 mm field and regular-frame size here are worked out from the drawings in that guide, so treat them as close but not printed figures. The large-frame diagram (printed range 18.2 × 11 cm) draws each clamp position as a square as wide as the 11 cm range, and the layout-screen picture shows a square embroidery area roughly 11 cm across, which supports 110 × 110 mm. Some dealer pages round the field to 4 × 4 in (about 100 mm), so the true figure could be a little smaller. The guide gives no design count, so the 60 comes from counting the one-point designs on its pattern chart; a marketplace listing also says about 60. The guide lists three fonts, 10 frame shapes and 12 stitch types, but no speed, weight, screen size or release year, so those are left empty. The screen is a touch panel with contrast control; the manual's pictures show no color, so it is marked monochrome. File formats are listed as card because the machine reads only Brother embroidery cards, and the guide says cards bought outside the US may not work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Brother PE150?

About 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) in one hooping. Brother's guide prints 70 × 70 mm for the small frame, 30 × 50 mm for the extra-small frame and 11 × 18.2 cm for the large frame across three clamp positions; the 110 × 110 mm main field is worked out from those drawings, not printed as a single figure.

What hoops does the Brother PE150 use?

One regular frame comes in the box. Brother's guide lists optional large, small (70 × 70 mm) and extra-small (30 × 50 mm) frames. The large frame stitches about 110 × 110 mm per position and lets you move between three positions for a 110 × 182 mm span.

What embroidery cards work with the Brother PE150?

It takes Brother memory cards that you plug into the card slot with the power off. The guide's US options list shows 19 cards, such as No. 1 Alphabet, No. 2 Flower and No. 10 Monogram emblem. Brother warns that cards bought in other countries may not work.

How much does a Brother PE150 cost?

Brother Canada lists the PE150 as discontinued and out of stock, and we show no new-price range for it. Any unit you find will be used or old stock, so check what is included, such as the frame and cards, before you pay.

Can the Brother PE150 read USB files or .pes designs?

Brother's guide describes only a memory-card slot for adding designs. It lists no USB port, computer cable, Wi-Fi or file formats, so you cannot copy your own .pes or .dst files to it.
