Bernina DECO 650: hoop size, file formats and specs
Also written: Deco 650, DECO650, Deco-650, Bernina Deco 650
An older Bernina embroidery-only machine with about a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) field, 50 built-in designs, 3 lettering fonts and a memory-card slot. It has no USB or computer link, so you cannot load your own design files. Bernina keeps its manual in an archive of older models.
The Bernina DECO 650 is a discontinued embroidery-only machine with a 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) embroidery field. It reads .CARD files and gets designs by Memory card, and has 50 built-in designs and 3 lettering fonts.
DECO 650 hoop size and embroidery area
The DECO 650 can stitch a design up to 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.
In the box: Regular frame (stitch area not printed; about 4 × 4 in) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)).
Optional from Bernina: Large frame (repositionable; 18.2 × 11 cm printed across three clamp positions) (4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)), Small frame (70 × 70 mm) (2.8 × 2.8 in (70 × 70 mm)), Extra-small frame (30 × 50 mm, can also be fitted sideways) (1.2 × 2 in (30 × 50 mm)).
Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, baby onesie, baby bib, patch.

What file format does the DECO 650 use?
The DECO 650 reads .CARD files. You load designs by Memory card. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the DECO 650 is for
A fit for someone who finds a used unit, or already owns embroidery cards, and wants simple small embroidery such as monograms, pockets and cuffs. Skip it if you want to load your own designs from a computer or stitch anything bigger than about 4 × 4 in.
Strengths
- 50 built-in one-point designs on the manual's pattern chart, plus 3 lettering fonts and 10 frame shapes with 12 stitch types
- A card slot takes embroidery memory cards; the manual names an Alphabet card, a Flower card and a Monogram emblem card
- Four frame sizes: a regular frame in the box, plus optional large, small (70 × 70 mm) and extra-small (30 × 50 mm) frames
- Touch-panel LCD with a layout screen and a trial function that traces the stitch area before you sew
- Saves up to 5 pattern combinations in memory, with up to 35 characters or patterns in one combination
Limits
- The field is only about 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm), and the optional large frame lets you chain designs along its 18.2 cm length, not stitch one bigger design
- The manual shows only a memory-card slot, so you cannot load .pes, .dst or other design files from a computer or USB drive
- Only 3 built-in lettering fonts
- Single needle and no cap frame, so you change colors by hand and it is not set up for finished hats
- Retired model: Bernina keeps its manual in an archive of older models
Good to know: Bernina's DECO 650 manual (a PDF in its archive of older user manuals) never prints the regular frame's stitch area or the machine's one-position stitch area. It prints 70 × 70 mm for the small frame, 50 × 30 mm for the extra-small frame, and 18.2 × 11 cm (7-3/16 × 4-5/16 in) as the large frame's range across three clamp positions (a, b and c). The 100 × 100 mm field and regular-frame size here are an estimate: the clamp positions in the manual's drawing sit about 4 cm apart, which leaves about 10 cm of height per position. Treat the field as close but not printed, and check it on your own machine's layout screen. Brother's PE-150 guide prints the same small, extra-small and large frame sizes in the same wording; we have not seen either maker say the machines are related. The manual gives no design count, so the 50 comes from counting the one-point designs on its pattern chart. It lists three fonts, 10 frame shapes and 12 stitch types, but no speed, weight, screen size or release year, so those are left empty. The screen is a touch panel; the manual's pictures show no color, so it is marked monochrome. File formats are listed as card because the machine reads only embroidery memory cards. We found no Bernina page naming a successor, so none is linked.

Frequently asked questions
What is the embroidery size of the Bernina DECO 650?
About 4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm) in one position. Bernina's manual prints 70 × 70 mm for the small frame, 30 × 50 mm for the extra-small frame and 18.2 × 11 cm for the large frame across three clamp positions. It never prints the regular frame's area, so the main field is an estimate.
What hoops does the Bernina DECO 650 use?
One regular frame comes in the box. The manual lists optional large, small (70 × 70 mm) and extra-small (30 × 50 mm) frames. The large frame lets you move the clamp between three positions to chain designs along an 18.2 cm length.
Can the Bernina DECO 650 read USB files or .pes designs?
Bernina's manual shows only a memory-card slot for adding designs. It lists no USB port, computer cable or file formats, so you cannot copy your own .pes or .dst files to it.
What embroidery cards work with the Bernina DECO 650?
It takes embroidery memory cards that you plug into the card slot with the power off. The manual names the No. 1 Alphabet card, the No. 2 Flower card and the No. 10 Monogram emblem card. Only characters from the Alphabet and Monogram emblem cards can be saved in the machine's memory, and only while the card is inserted.
Can the Bernina DECO 650 embroider hats?
Bernina's manual lists no cap frame for the DECO 650, so it is not set up for finished caps. Its frames are made for flat fabric.
