Brother PE180D: hoop size, file formats and specs

Also written: PE-180D, PE 180D

An older Brother embroidery-only machine sold with a Disney design set, a touch-screen LCD and a card slot. It stitches about 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) at a time and has no USB, so you cannot load your own files. Brother lists it as discontinued.

The Brother PE180D is a discontinued embroidery-only machine with a 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) embroidery field. It reads .CARD files and gets designs by Memory card and 3 lettering fonts.

PE180D hoop size and embroidery area

The PE180D can stitch a design up to 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) in one hooping, which is the 4 × 4 in size. That is the field limit: a larger hoop from another maker will not let it stitch a bigger area.

In the box: Regular frame (about 4.3 × 4.3 in) (4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm)).

Optional from Brother: Large frame (repositionable, 110 × 110 mm per position, 110 × 182 mm in three positions) (4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm)), Small frame (70 × 70 mm) (2.8 × 2.8 in (70 × 70 mm)), Extra-small frame (30 × 50 mm, can also be fitted sideways) (1.2 × 2 in (30 × 50 mm)).

Fits in one hooping at typical size: left chest, pocket, sleeve, beanie, baby onesie, baby bib, patch.

What file format does the PE180D use?

The PE180D reads .CARD files. You load designs by Memory card. Designs in other formats (for example .JEF or .EXP) need converting first with embroidery software.

Who the PE180D is for

A fit for someone who finds a used unit, or already owns Brother cards, and wants simple small embroidery such as names, pockets and cuffs. Skip it if you want to load your own designs from a computer or stitch anything bigger than about 4.3 × 4.3 in.

Strengths

  • Touch-screen LCD that suggests thread colors and shows an estimated stitching time
  • Marketed with a set of Disney designs built in, plus a card slot for Brother embroidery cards
  • Four frame sizes in Brother's guide: a regular frame in the box, plus optional large, small (70 × 70 mm) and extra-small (30 × 50 mm) frames
  • Three built-in lettering fonts and a trial function that traces the stitch area before you sew
  • Saves up to 5 pattern combinations in memory

Limits

  • The field is only about 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm), and the optional large frame only lets you chain designs, not stitch a bigger one
  • No USB port, cable or Wi-Fi in Brother's guide: designs come from Brother's own cards, so you cannot load .pes or .dst files
  • Single needle and no cap frame, so you change colors by hand and it is not set up for finished hats
  • Discontinued, so new cards and accessories are mostly found second-hand

Good to know: Brother's US and Canadian PE180D pages say the product is discontinued and list no specs. The only Brother document for it is a shared user's guide for the PE150, PE170D, PE180D and PE190D (dated 2005, in English and Spanish). That guide never names the PE180D or Disney designs, so the details here come from its general sections plus Brother's own product pages. It does not print the regular frame's stitch area in mm. It prints 70 × 70 mm for the small frame, 50 × 30 mm for the extra-small frame, and 18.2 × 11 cm for the large frame across three clamp positions. The 110 × 110 mm field is worked out from those figures, as on the PE150, so treat it as close but not printed. Some dealer pages may round it to 4 × 4 in. The guide lists three fonts, a memory card slot, no USB, and 12 stitch types. A reseller listing says the machine has 40 Disney patterns, about 900 patterns counting built-in and card designs, and 38 built-in stitches; none of that is in the guide, so the built-in design count is left empty. Brother's pages do not give the screen size or say whether it is color, so it is marked monochrome only because the guide's pictures show no color. No release year, speed or weight was found.

Frequently asked questions

What is the embroidery size of the Brother PE180D?

About 4.3 × 4.3 in (110 × 110 mm) in one hooping. Brother's shared guide prints 70 × 70 mm for the small frame and 30 × 50 mm for the extra-small frame; the main field is worked out from those figures, not printed as one number.

Is the Brother PE180D a Disney embroidery machine?

Brother's US page describes the PE180D as a Disney machine with a large touch-screen LCD. A reseller listing says it has 40 Disney patterns, but Brother's guide does not give a count.

Can the Brother PE180D read USB files or .pes designs?

Brother's guide describes only a memory card slot for adding designs. It lists no USB port, computer cable, Wi-Fi or file formats, so you cannot copy your own .pes or .dst files to it.

What hoops does the Brother PE180D use?

One regular frame comes in the box. Brother's guide lists optional large, small (70 × 70 mm) and extra-small (30 × 50 mm) frames. The large frame lets you move between three positions for a 110 × 182 mm span.

Is the Brother PE180D still sold?

No. Brother's US and Canadian pages list it as discontinued, so any unit you find will be used or old stock. Check that the frame and any cards are included before you pay.
